A. T. WOLFE.
CASING RING AND TUBE HANGER FOR WELLS.
No. 580,442. Patent-ed Apr. 13, 1897.
MINI
Wf/YVTjjfZ ABRAHAM T. YVOLFE, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
CASING-RING AND TUBE-HANGER FOR WELLS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 580,442, dated April 13, 1897.
Application filed October 5, 1896- To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM T. WOLFE, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casing-Rings and Tube-Hangers for Wells; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a casinghead and tube-hanger for wells, and has for its object 'to provide a coupling between the tubing and the usual T-coupling which shall be of sufficient strength and arranged to withstand an unusual amount of strain, and thereby prevent breakage at these points, and, if broken, shall retain the tube in place in the well.
The invention further consists in the peculiar formation of said coupling, to wit: its conical or spherical taper toward its extreme upper point or at the base of the screw-threaded projection to which the T-coupling attaches, whereby strength is secured at this point, as the annular screw-threaded projection is reinforced by the metal of the coupling.
The invention further consists in the parts as hereinafter shown, described, and claim ed.
The invention consists in the parts and com bination of parts hereinafter specified, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a casing-ring or casing-head with the hanger in position, with the T-coupling secured thereto, showing the pump rod and tube broken off. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the casing-ring or casing-head therein, showing the tube-hanger and conical screw-threaded tubular projection for attachment to the T- coupling.
1 designates the casing-ring or casing-head, and for convenience of description I will hereinafter designate the same the casinghead, having an internally-screw-threaded portion 2 to receive the screw-threaded end of the casing 3, as in the usual construction. Casing-head 1 is formed with an annular Serial No. 607,852. (No model.)
shouldered portion 4, upon which rests a hanger 5, constituting one of the essential elements of my invention and which will therefore be explained in detail. Hanger 5 comprises a cap of a maximum diameter at the base to fit within the annulus of the easing'head and rest upon the base 4, saidhanger being held to its seat upon the internal shoulder 4 by means of the setscrews 5, screwing through the side of the casing-head above the shoulder a and bearing against the in clined upper side of the hanger. The hanger is provided with a conical elevation in reinforcementof the same to a truncation of the cone, as at X X, from which projects a conical screw-threaded extension 6 to receive the internally-screw -threaded T-coupling 7, of like contour, provided with a stuffing-box 8, through which the pump-rod 9 reciprocates. Hanger 5 is annular, the central orifice being of a diameter to receive a screw-thread, into which tubing 10 is screwed and suspended therefrom.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when tubing 10 is secured into the hanger 5 it has the broad base-support 4, that virtually precludes the possibility of lateral sway when the derrick is affected by wind-pressure, and that by reinforcement of the screw-threaded portion 6 in its adjustment to the T-coupling a maximum strength is insured and the separation or fracture of these parts is avoided of lateral swaying. In addition to the rigidity of the tube and coupling-support it will be seen that I have simplified the connection as'between the tube and T-coupling or (the polish-rod and pumpbarrel) from that heretofore employed and that I have practically insured against the fracture of the parts due to lateral swaying of the derrick and its connection therewith as occasioned by the frequent gales incident to the territory in which pumping-wells are employed.
My invention is particularly designed for use in oil-wells, and inthe description I have used language applicable thereto. At the same time I apprehend that the inexpensive construction and close'assemblage of parts are applicable to pumping devices of all characters and so wish the invention to be interpreted.
WVhat I claim is In a tube-hanger for Wells, a casing-head 5 provided with an annular internal shoulder, a hanger comprising a plate held to its seat upon the shoulder, the upper side of the hanger being spherical and terminating in a screw-threaded projection, a tube secured to 10 and depending from the hanger, and a T- coupling screwed upon the reinforced threaded projection upon the upper face of the hanger.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereby afliX my signature in pres' ence of two Witnesses.
ABRAHAM T. IVOLFE.
