UNiTEn STATES PATENTY OFFICE.
CEPIIAS O. SHELBURN, OF COLORADO, TEXAS.
PUlVlP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,209, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed August 12, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CErHAs C. SHELBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oolorado, in the county of Mitchell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pnm ps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others'skilledin the art to which it. appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to pumps, more especially such as are used in connection with deep wells; audit consists in certain improvements in the construction of the saine, as hereinafter set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawings, 'Figure l illustrates my improvements in side view, a working-barrel being shown in broken lines. Fig. 2 is a like section of the check-valve and connections. Fig. 3 represents the checkvalve and seat detached.
To the sucker-rod A lis secured a valve-cage B, within which is loosely placed a valve O, which is provided with a hollow stem a, a leather facing c, and a head l), the parts being secured by a bolt d, which extends up through the stem, and the head l), which is threaded and screwed to the upper end of said bolt. rl`he valve-cage B is formed with the interior guides e for the head l), said guides serving to keep the valve in position and prevent its tilting during its vertical movement. A leather packing g is placed at the bottom of the cage B, surrounding the same, as shown.
D indicates a hollow cylindrical body, which is provided with a threaded annular flange t' at the top, on which the valve O rests, and to which the cage Bis screwed. The body D is tapered downward somewhat, as seen at f, and terminates with an annular threaded flange m. Two cup-leathers n and o, one being within the other, inclose the tapered part of the body D and fit on the shoulder p, being secured by a hollow cylinder E, which is screwed on the frange nz. rl`he two cup-leathers n and o form a double packing, and as the outer packing is worn away the inner one expands and takes its place.
At the lower end of the working-barrel is placed a check-valve F in a valve-cage G, a seat being constructed for said valve in the following manner: A casing or shell H is secured to the lower end of the working-barrel,
the said shell tapering downward and being Serial No. 361,781. (No model.)
provided with an annular shoulder r, which is formed on its inner surface near its lower edge. The seat J, which fits in the shell Il, has a central opening surrounded by a flange s, so that an annular space is left between said flange and the shell to receive the valvecage G and the cup-leather u, lit-ting on the lower edge of said valve-cage. The seat J is also provided with bifurcations or downward extensions if, which set against the shell and rest on the shoulder r. The extensions v are made thin enough to be somewhat elastic and yield to pressure when the seatJ is placedin the shell; but the seat is connected with the check-valve and may be readily withdrawn with the latter when desired.
The check-valve F and cage G are similar in construction to the plunger-valve O and cage B before described. The cage G is connected with flange s of seat J, and is provided with packing u at the bottom. The top y of cage G is provided with external andinternal threads for the attachment of arod, by means of which the valve l", with its cage and seat, may be withdrawn from the workingbarrel when desired.
l claiml. The combination, with the working-barrel, of a casing or shell secured to the lower end of said barrel, the said shell tapering downward and beingprovided with an annular shoulder 'i' on its inner surface, a valve seat provided with an annular flange s and downward elastic extensions constructed to close against said shell and reston said shoulder r, and a valve-cage connected with said seat and containing a valve, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination, wit-h the working-barrel of a pump, of a shell H, attached to the lower part of said barrel and provided with an inner shoulder r, the seat J, provided with flange .5^ and elastic downward proj ectioli's o, which set against the shell and rest on shoulder r, check-valve F, and cage G, the latter being connected with flange s and provided with packing at its lower edge, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OEPIIAS O. SHELBURN.
