RIVET CATCHER.

WITNESSES TATE arn'r BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, WILLIAM H. MILLER, CHARLES H. OLIVER,
BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA.
TO WILLIAM G. THOMPSON, AND WILLIAM A. STEIN, OF
RIVET-CATCH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,503, dated December 19, 189 9. Application filed September 5, 1899. Serial No. 729,457. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BEIGHEY, of Oonnoquinessing township, in the county of Butlerand State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rivet-Catchers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which to Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation showing one form of my improved rivet-catcher in position. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line II II of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a central vertical section showing a modified form.
My invention relates to the rivet-catchers employed in connection with deep wells to prevent broken rivets from passing into the pumping-barrel and injuring the parts; and its object is to make the construction more economical and durable, as well as to improve the operation of such devices.
In the drawings, referring to the form of Fig. 1, 2 represents a bulged collar or coupling havinginner screw-threads in its end portions, which are of reduced diameter. The tubing 3 is screwed into the upper end of the collar, and the working barrel 4: is screwed upwardly into its lower end, the barrel being threaded a sufficient distance, so that its end portion 5 will project up some distance within the coupling and form a pocket of annular form in the lower part of the coupling. The upper end of the working barrel forms a seat, upon which rests a hollow perforated 3 5 double cone 6, both conical portions being provided with perforations to allow free and uninterrupted flow of liquid. The ends of the cone are, provided with holes, through which the valve-rod 7 extends, the rod reciprocating through the double cone, which is seated on the top of the working barrel.
In using the device the tubing, with the collar 2 and the working barrel, is lowered to the proper position, and the valve-rod,
with the double cone resting thereon, is lowered, with the rods, through the casing until the cone rests upon the upper end of the working barrel, the valves being lowered into the barrel. With the parts in this position the pump works in the ordinary manner, the rod reciprocating through the double cone without lifting it from the seat. The perforations in both end portions of the cone allow a free flow of liquid, while any rivets or foreign matter falling through the tubing are deflected by the upper cone and fall into the annular pocket in the lower part of the sleeve.
The pocket within the sleeve may be formed in many other ways than that shown without departing from my invention. Thus the bulged sleeve may have an inner sleeve of the desired length secured within its lower ends by screwing, riveting, or shrinking it in place or by casting it integrally with the collar.
If the collar is not adapted to fit and. screw upon the Working barrel, I may use the supplemental sleeve or nipple 8, which is provided with external screw-threads, its lower end being screwed into the collar 9 at the top of the working barrel, the upper end portion of the nipple projecting up into the bulged collar to form the annular pocket, as before. The action in this form will be the same as that in Fig. 1.
The advantages of my invention result from the durability, cheapness, and simplicity of the device, which does not interfere with the regular-pumping operations. There is nothing to become disarranged, injured, or worn out, While any rivets or foreign matter are effectually trapped, so as to not harm the working parts.
Many changes maybe made in the form and arrangement of the parts without departing from my invention. I
I claim--- 7 1. An enlarged collar or coupling arranged to be secured above the Working barrel, an annular pocket formed in its lower part, and an inner perforated double cone or deflector arranged to rest upon the pocket portion within the collar; substantially as described.
2. In a rivet-catcher, an enlarged collar or coupling arranged to be secured above the working barrel, and having a hollow bushing projecting upwardly in its lower portion to form a pocket, and a double cone deflector arrangedto rest upon the bushing and having and arranged to deflect foreign matter into a, hole for the valve-rod; substantially as dethe pocket; substantially as described. [0 scribed. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 3. In a, rivet-catcher, an enlarged collar army hand. 5 ranged to be secured to the upper end of the WILLIAM J. BEIGHEY.
