PUMP.
Application filed April 5, 1923. Serial No. 630,()76.
In pumping oil froni deep wells it is custoniary to use a plunger pump provided with a ball valve, the said pump being reciprocated in a tnbular discharge column. in the type of pump now cominonly used sand is permitted to gather in pockets in the outside surface of the plunger, thereby coring the opposing surfaces of the dis- ChLTf e pipe and plunger, materially reducing their eii'ective lives and adding materially to the cost of equipment by their necessary constant replacement.
it is the object of my invention to provide a plunger pump for the purpose specified that is so constructed as to efi'ectually prevent the gathering of an erosive material between the plungcr and the discharge casin; in which it works.
It is another object of my invention to provide a device of the character indicated that will be simple in form and Construction, econonieal to nanufacture, durable, and highly eiiicient in its practical application.
in the drawing 1- Figure l is a longitudinal section my improved punp.
Figurc 3 is a view of another embodiment of my invention, partly in section and part broken away.
Reierring more particularly to the drawing, I show at 1 the body portion of the plungcr having a flange 2- formed thereon and threaded above and below the flange as :rt and 4- to receive upper and lower sleeves 5 and (5 as shown the upper sleeve 5 having an inwardly bevelled upper edge 7 as shown.
The portion 1 has a passage 8 forned longitu 'linally therein as shown, this pass c in the present case being made square whereby to engage a wrench and permit ot' its easy separation from other parts. In the upper part of portion 1 is removably inserted an elenent 9 having a valve seat 10 torined in its upper and nner edge to receive a ball valve 11. The outer surface oi? the upper portion of part l is threaded to receive cage 12.
The cage, of course, pernits the Upward flow of oil and yet prevents the escape of the freely nioving ball 11 which closes oti the passage 8 while the plunger is ascending.
Assuming now that the pump is in full operation, the oil is moved upwardly as indicated by the arrow. in reciprocating sand or other erosive material has no opporunity to lodge between the casing 17 and the plunger and consequently the life of the instrument greatly prolonged.
In Figurc 3 I show another embodiment of the invention in which the sleeve 18 is internally threadcd as at 19 and the annular portion 13 of cage 12 is threaded as at 20 so that a satisfactory smooth wearing surface .is Secured.
It may now readily be seen that I have provided a structure that is not only simple in form and econonical to manufacture, but eii'ectually prevents and entirely eliminates the accunulation of erosive material between the plunger and casing.
It is to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described only two enibodiments of the invention, changes in :form and Construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
,i claim:
In a pump of the character described, an element having externally threaded end portions of equal diameter and one threaded end portion of reduced diameter and having a passage fornied longitudinally therethrough and a check Valve controlling said passage, a cage threaded on to the threaded end portion of reduced diameter, an annular flange concentrically forned on said element between said threaded end portions of equal diameter, and sleeves of substantially the same external diameter as said fiange engaging said threaded ends of equal diameter and brought into contact with said flange whereby to cooperate with said flange to form a continuous cylindrical enclosure for said element.
