PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN R. GRAHAM, OF BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO I/VILLIAM M. GRAHAM, OF SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA.
ADJUSTER FOR DEEP-WELL SUCKER-RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,621, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed April 12, 1904. Serial No. 202,799.
To ctll'whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bakersfield, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjusters for Deep-VVell Sucker- Rods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for connecting the sucker-rods of deepwell pumps with the walking-beam. Its object is to provide a convenient and practical means for adjusting the pump-valves without the necessity of uncoupling the sucker-rods from the walking-beam and then having to pull up or lower the rods by a cumbersome mechanism of rope and tackle.
In oil and other deep wells it is necessary from time to time to effect a readjustment of the pump-valves according to the nature of the material being pumped or the amount of sand carried in suspension or for other causes. Various types of adjusters are in use; but they generally employ a form offrictiongrip on the exposed part of the sucker-rod, and trouble from slippage is of frequent occurrence, since the sucker-rod may be several hundred feet in length and very heavy.
My invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a continua tion of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of stir rup.
A represents the tubing of a deep oil or Artesian well; 2, the sucker-rod; 3, the pumpbarrel; 4:, the lower stationary valve; 5, the upper valve; 6, the discharge-pipe at the surface; 7, the stufling-box through which the polished rod 8 operates, and 9 the walking beam actuated from any suitable source of power and adapted to effect the reciprocation of the sucker rpd and valve 5. My invention includes a stirrup 10, embracing and having a pivotal movement on the end of the beam and terminating at the lower end in the form of a split nut 11, whose parts are adapted to be securely locked together by means of the bolts 12.
13 is a threaded rodengaging the nut portion 11 and having a swivel connection 14 at its lower end with a short section 15, which connects with the polished rod 8. The section 15 and swivel union are locked by means of a set-nut 16. The stirrup and rod 13 may be of any suitable length. In practice the former is usually from seven to eight feet in length and the latter about three feet. The rod 13 is provided with a polygonal surface 17 for the engagement of a wrench by which it may be turned to raise or lower the suckerrod in adjusting the distance between the valves 4: 5. To turn rod 13, the bolts 12 are slackened up a little. After adjustment they are screwed down tight to clamp rod 13 and prevent its turning. The use of the threaded engaging surfaces on rod 13 and part 11 not only admits of any degree of adjustment, but when bolts 12 are tightened absolutely prevents slippage, which, as before said, is a source of continual annoyance with the adjusters ordinarily in use. I also provide the section 15 with a polygonal surface 18 for the engagement of a wrench whereby the sucker-rod and upper valve may be turned, as is sometimes necessary in order to dislodge accumulations on the pipe. The use of the swivel 14: permits this without in any way disturbing the valve adjustment and avoids the necessity under conditions ordinarily in vogue of disconnecting from the walking-beam and suspending the sucker-rod from the hoisting-rope.
When it is necessary to withdraw the suckerrod from the well, the hoisting-rope is attached by a grab or other suitable means to the upper end of the rod 13, the bolts 12 removed, allowing the arms of the stirrup to open out, releasing the hold on the rod, and leaving the weight of the sucker-rod and attachments to be assumed by the hoisting-rope.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Adevice of the character described having in combination aWalking-beam, a sucker-rod,
a pump-barrel, the upper and lower valves of a deep-well pump, a swivel union connected to the sucker-rod, a threaded rod connected to the union, and a yoke from which the threaded rod is suspended said yoke consisting of a single piece of metal folded upon itself and with its bight spread or open to receive and embrace the end of the walking-beam, and havingits side arms converging downwardly, and
I0 opposing clamp members on said arms and adapted to clamp the threaded rod, said yoke and clamp members consisting of a unitary structure, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 5 nesses.
