Description
April 5, 1960 J. A. HAGAR ADJusTER FOR oIL PUMPS Filed Deo. 1l
ADJ ns1-ABLE,
ADJUSTER FOR OIL PUMPS James A. Hagar, Moran, Tex.
Application December 11, 1958, Serial No. 779,619
2 Claims. (Cl. 74-586) The present invention generally relates to a device for supporting a polish or sucker rod of a pump from the pump jack and more particularly to a device for adjustment of the polish rod without stopping the pump.
'In oil well pumps, it is necessary to adjust the polish or sucker rod of the pump to prevent bottoming. This adjustment is usually accomplished by varying the relation between the pump jack and the polish rod which necessitates stoppage of the pump. Accordingly, it is the primary object of the present invention to provide an assembly interconnecting the polish rod and pump jack for varying the relationship therebetween without stopping the pump.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjuster for oil Well pumps which is simple in construction, easy to install, easy to operate, effective for adjustment purposes and inexpensive to manufacture.
Still other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of an exemplifying embodiment of this invention, from the appended claims, and from the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective View of the adjuster of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the adjuster showing the manner of adjustment; and
Figure 3 is a partial perspective view of a slightly modified but preferred form of the invention.
Referring now speciiically to the drawings, the numeral generally designates the adjuster of the present invention which is attached to a conventional polish or sucker rod 12 of an oil Well pump and having the usual bridle 14 connected thereto for engagement with a pump jack in the usual manner. The bridal 14 is constructed of a flexible line and has eye members or loops 16 at each end thereof.
The adjuster 10 includes a pair of longitudinally spaced clamp assemblies generally designated by numerals 18 and 20. Each of the clamp assemblies 18 and 20 includes a backing plate 22I having a groove 24 therein partially receiving the rod 12, a front plate 26 having a groove 28 therein partially receiving said rod and clamp bolts 30 holding the plates in clamped relation to the rod 12. Each of the front plates 26 is provided with a longitudinally extending sleeve portion 32 which sleeve portions are in alignment with each other for receiving an elongated bolt 34 having an elongated threaded portion 36 threadedly engaged with the internally threaded sleeve portion 32 on the clamp assembly 18. The other end of the bolt 34 is provided with a polygonal head 38 for receiving a wrench and a pair of peripheral ribs 40 spaced atenfed .Apx- 5 .1960
longitudinally from, eachpthenforpositioning on ,opposite sides of the sleeve portion 32 on the clamp assembly whereby rotation of the bolt will cause movement of the clamp assemblies 18 and 20 towards and away from each other. A lock nut 42 is provided on the threaded end 36 of the bolt 34 for locking the bolt 34 to the sleeve portion 32 on clamp assembly 18.
Mounted on the sleeve portion 32 of the clamp assembly 18 is a pair of oppositely extending eye bolts or loops 44 as by welding 46 for engagement with the loops 16 on the ends of the bridle 14 thereby attaching the clamp assembly 18 to the bridle 14. The sleeve portion 32 on clamp assembly 20 is a bearing sleeve and there are two bolts 30 on each side of the assembly 20 while only a single bolt is used on each side of the clamp assembly 18 for facilitating the loosening of the clamp assembly 1S for longitudinal movement in relation to the rod 12.
In use, the adjuster 1li is used with both clamp assemblies 18 and 20 tightly clamped. When it is desired to adjust the limits 0f the stroke of the polish rod 12, the pair of clamp bolts 30 on clamp assembly 18 are loosened as is the lock nut 42. The bolt 34 may then be rotated for moving the clamp assembly 18 longitudinally of the rod 12 thereby varying the point of connection between the bridle 14 and the rod 12 for varying the limits of movement of the rod 12.
In Figure 3, there is illustrated a preferred arrangement in which the rod 12 is in alignment with the center of the clamp assemblies 18' and 20. This prevents any possibility of side draft and four bolts 30 are employed to render the device stronger. The eye members 44 may also be in the form of U-shaped loops welded to the clamp 18.
It is understood that this invention is not confined to the particular embodiment shown and described, the same being merely illustrative, and that this invention may be carried ont in other ways within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of this invention, as it is obvious that the particular embodiment shown and described is only one of the many that may be employed to attain the objects of this invention. It is understood that the eye bolts 44 may be a pair of bolts with latch hooks on the end whereby the line would not be cut every time an adjustment is made.
I claim:
l. An adjuster interconnecting the polish rod and pump jack in an oil well pump comprising a first clamping assembly connected with the polish rod, a second clamping assembly connected to the polish rod in longitudinally spaced relation to the first clamping assembly, a iiexible bridle mounted on the second clamp assembly and connected with the pump jack, and an adjustment bolt means interconnecting said clamp assemblies for moving the second clamp assembly in relation to the rst clamp assembly -when the second clamp assembly is loosened from the polish rod for varying the point of connection between the bridle and polish rod; wherein each said assembly includes a pair of clamp plates with one of said plates of each pair having a longitudinal sleeve with one of the sleeve being threaded, said means including an elongated bolt having the threaded' portion engaged in the threaded sleeve, the other end of the bolt being rotatively mounted in the other sleeve, and means preventing longitudinal movement of the other end of the bolt in the sleeve thereby moving tion to each other upon rotation'of the bolt.
2. An adjuster for connecting a polish rod to a pump jack in an oil well, comprising upper and lower clamping assemblies attached to said rod in longitudinally spaced relation; flexible bridle means connected to the upper clamping assembly and engaging said pump jack to support the upper clamping assembly therebelow; each of said clamping assemblies comprising a pair of opposed plates serving to clamp the polish rod therebetween; screw means transxing the plates of each pair to releasably tighten their grip on the rod; and sleeve means xed on one plate of each pair, saidV sleeve means having their the clamp assemblies in rela-l` bores mutually aligned parallel to the axis of the polish rod; and bolt means transxing said bores for adjusting the mutual spacing between said clamping assemblies.
