` (3 Nudel.) R- R- WRITING,
No. 580,024 STBREOSGOPB,
k Patented Apr' 6 1897 muumlmlu i uw w 1 l M Iii' im i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD R. 'VIIITING, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
STEREOSCOPE.
4iIEECIFICA.'.I`I01\T forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,024, dated April 6, 1897.
Application filed June 26, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD R. VHITING, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Stereoscope, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to stereoscopes and more particularly to a combination stereoscope and view-holder.
Heretofore a stereoscope has been held either in the hand or supported upon a standard and the views placed within the holder one at a time and removed after each sight thereof. rlhis arrangement necessitated keeping the views in a separate position, and this resulted either in losing the views or they soon became damaged and soiled.
N ow the object of my invention is to avoid all these objections and provide a neat and compact device which shall contain all of the views and likewise the stereoscope, which device can be opened and set up for the purpose of exhibiting the views, and as each view is looked at it is removed and placed at the back of the series within the holder, so that the views will always appear in regular order or rotation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a folding box which shall be exceedingly neat and compact and also arrange the stereoscope in such a manner that it can also be folded when not in use and rest within the box when closed.
Vith these various objects in view my invention consists of a box made in two sections hinged together, one part of said box being adapted to receive and hold the views, the stereoscope being hinged to the other section and adapted to fold upon the first-mentioned section, and means for holding the said sections in their proper position, either opened or closed.
Myinvention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed ont in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a view showing the device set up ready for use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the device closed when not in use. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudial section of the Serial No. 597,063. (No model device as shown in Fig. l. Fig. t is a similar view as shown in Fig. 2. v
In carrying out my invention I employ a box which is composed of a section A, closed at one end, opened at the opposite end, and the sides adjacent to the opened end are cut away, as shown at A2.
The top section B of the box has very narrow sides B' for the greater portion of its length, and adjacent to the cutaway sides of the section A said sides extend upward, as most clearly shown at B2, the said top being hinged to the section A at C, so that said top can be folded down in line with the bottom of the box, as most clearly shown in Fig. l.
The stereoscope-hood D is hinged to the outer end of the top, and the division-board E is also hinged to said top and is adapted to fold downward when not in use.
A supporting-piece F is hinged to one corner of the box and adapted to fold down and support the device in a proper position for exhibition, said supporting-piece being held in position by a brace G, pivoted to the box A and having a notch at its outer end which engages the pin II on the supporting-piece F.
The views I are contained within the box A, a division-piece or partition K being arranged within the box, against which the rearmost view rests.
A view-holder L, integral with partition, slides upon the top when folded outwardly, said holder being constructed in any suitable manner to hold the view and provided with a suitable member lll for moving backward and forward, and also provided with a tongue M', adapted to engage one of the series of notches N2 made in the bottom, whereby the view-holder is held in the proper position after being once adjusted.
The selection of views are arranged within the box A, and after the device is set up, as shown in Fig. l, and the holder adjusted the view at the front is placed within the holder and looked at as long as desired. This view is then removed and placed at the back of the series and the next view at the front placed in the holder. This is continued until the entire series have been viewed.
Then it is desired to fold the instrument, the division-board is iirst turned down and IOO the stereoscope-hood thrown upward. The top of the box is then folded over the stereoscope-hood, passing down to the rear of the series of views and back of the partition. The side portions-of the top are of sufficient height to accommodate the division-board, and after the top is folded down upon the box the supporting-piece is turned up against the end, completing the end of the box, as it Will be understood that the top adjacent to the end of the box is also opened, and this supportingpiece after being turned up into this position (shown in Fig. 2) is secured by means of the brace, thereby locking the box closed.
It Will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap and simple contrivance which can be opened or closed at will and will constitute at all times a complete stereoscope and view-holder.
Thedevice is exceedingly compact, being about eight inches in length, seven and onehalf inches in Width, and four and one-half inches in depth, and presents a neat and attractive appearance in either a combined or closed position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the box opened at one end, of a cover opened also at one end and hinged to the opened end of the box, the stereoscope-hood attached to lthe outer end of the cover, and a combined end board and sup port hinged to the end of the box and adapted to close the opened end of said box and cover when the same is folded or closed, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with the box opened at one end, of the cover opened also at one end and hinged to saidopened end, the stereoscope-hood hinged to the outer end of said cover, the division-board hinged also to said cover, the combined end board and support hinged to the end of the box and adapted to close the opened end of said box and to cover the same When folded or closed and the brace for holding said board in proper position, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with the box opened at position, substantially as shown and de-A scribed. Y
