UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IOIIN RUOKSTINAT, OF EAST PROVIDENCE, RI'IODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO JULIUS PEGEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SLATE OR BLACKBOARD CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,002, dated April 6, 1897.
Application filed A il 29,1896. Serial No. 589,4:98x (No mocleL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RUCKSTINAT, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Providence, county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slate or Blackboard Cleaners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a IO part of this specification.
My invention consists in a holder for a slate or other cleaner which comprises a duplex compartment-holder, each portion having walls terminating in an inwardly-extending orificed flanged portion, one compartment being adapted to hold a cleaner and the other a wiper, said cleaner and wiper being held in their respective compartments by extending within and against the inner surface of said flange portion and having a portion projecting through the orifice of said flange portion, one of said compartments having a horizontal flange and the two compartments being held together by the interlocking of the flanges.
I will first describe my invention as embodied in the accompanying drawings and then point out the invention in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the holder and cover with sponge and waste in position. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing the parts of the holder and the cover separated from each other.
A represents one compartment of the holder. 0 represents the other compartment of the 3 5 holder.
I3 represents a plate separating the compartments A and O, and D represents the cover.
The two compartments A and O are, with the exception of the flange c of the compartment C, similar, but inverted. Each is in the form of a frustum of a cone, having an inwardly-extending flange G, provided with rounded corners and having in the inwardlyextending flange portion an orifice g.
The two parts A and O are connected together by bending the flange 0 upon the horizontal flange of the portion A, and between the two portions is placed the plate 13. In
the compartment A is placed a wiper F, of
waste or other material, which is soft and dry and adapted to absorb moisture. This wad is forced through the orifice g and below the flange portion G, below which it extends, and by the said flange portion Gr it is held in position. The moist sponge E is placed in the compartment or portion 0 in the same manner as the waste is placed in compartment A. The coverD is conical in shape and is slipped over the compartment 0 and covers the projecting portion of the sponge. WVhen it is desired to use the sponge, the cover D is slipped off, exposing the sponge. The sponge being used to remove the writing, &c., the holder is turned around and the wiperF used. The rounded corners G of the compartments A and O prevent scratching, even if such pressure be used as to bring the holder itself against the surface to be cleaned. In place of the sponge any other absorbent material may be used.
By having the compartment holding the cleaner conical in shape and using a conical cover the cover will be securely held in position on the compartment without using any 7 5 fastening devices.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is 4 In a slate or other cleaner, in combination, a duplex compartment-holder, each portion having walls terminating in an inwardly-extending orificed flanged portion, one compartment being adapted to hold a cleaner and the other a wiper, said cleaner and wiper being held in their respective compartments by extending within and against the inner surface of said flange portion, and having a portion projecting through the orifice of said flange portion, one of said compartments having a 0 horizontal flange, and the other a horizontal and vertical flange, and the two compartments being held together by the interlocking of the flanges.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN RUOKSTINAT. Witnesses:
J 0s. J. EISEMAN, J12, JOHN ROETHLEIN.
