Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH M. COLBURN, OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT.
PICKER FOR LOOMS.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, .TosIAH M. COLBURN, of Derby, in the county of New Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Weavers Shuttle- Pickers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my invention consists in applying or inserting a portion of caoutchouc or india rubber to that point of the shuttle picker which meets the point of the shuttle when in use in the loom.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention I will proceedl to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my pickers in any of the usualv forms, and they are attached to the laith of the loom, and actuated in the throwing of the shuttle in any of the ways in common use in power-looms for weaving cotton, woolen, or other fabrics; and the pickers may be made of raw hide, tanned sole leather or any suitable materials which have been heretofore used; and any good workman acquainted with weaving or loom-building can add or insert my improvement into almost any kind of'shuttle-pickers in various ways,
but I prefer raw-hide or sole leather for the body and outside of my pickers, and to insert the india-rubber between the two outside of hide or leather, at the place where the shuttle point strikes the picker-as is more fully shown in the drawings hereto annexed, at Figure I, at C, B, where the blue color indicates the inserted indiaerubber in the drawing; so that the point of the shuttle may have a conical indent, or suitable countersink made to fit it, or worn in by use,
through one thickness of the hide or leather, -before the point touches the india rubber;
5,796, dated September 26, 1848.
for by this means the shuttle is more vsure to take and keep its true direction; and when such countersink fits the point, and the point comes to a moderate bearing upon the india rubber, the countersink ceases in a great degree to wear further, or wears very slowly, and the picker is rendered much more durable, and better in other respects.
In the drawings annexed, and making "a part of this specification, Fig. lrepresents a picker of full size A, with part of the spindle or smooth rod R, on which it slides forward when the shuttle is thrown, and is driven back by the returning spindle.
C, represents a countersink either made to fit, or will soon be worn in by use, by the point of the shuttle.
B, shows one of the several methods in which I add or insert the india rubber, and thoughV other methods would answer the same purpose, and would suggest themselvesto any workman, yet I prefer this method as ythe most simple and convenient, and as good as any other for use. i
Fig. 2 represents the laith l of a-loom with its shuttle-boxes uncovered in front, to show the operation more plainly, and its picker-rods r, r, in place, and a shuttle S, also in place, and A, A, show a pair of pickers in their proper places when in use.
What I claim as my invent-ion and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The addition, application or insertion of india-rubber to that part of weavers shuttle pickers wherethe point of the shuttle strikes the picker. V
