FOLDING BED. No. 579,425. Patented-Mar. 23, 1897..
ATTORNEYS. H
Ilnrrnn Sterne PATIENT rrrcn,
MANUEL IiEEANDRElV COLLINS, OF I'IENDRICKSON, MISSOURI.
FOLDKNG BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,425, dated March 23, 1897.
Application filed June 11, 1896.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MANUEL LEEANDREW COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of I-Iendrickson, county of Butler, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in folding beds, the object of the invention being to provide a compact article of furniture which is adaptable for use in small rooms.
The device comprises a combination bed and bureau, and it is constructed in such a manner as to utilize the entire structure both in its folded and unfolded positions.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the an nexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bed, showing the same folded into the shape of a bureau;
and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation thereof, showing the same open in the position for use as a bed.
In the practice of my invention I provide primarily a box A, which said box is provided with four corner-posts a, which said posts are extended at their lower ends to form legs a. Hinged to the rear wall A of the said box is a plate A which is adapted to be folded downwardly upon the bed when the same is not in use and to be extended upwardly for a headboard when the device is used as a bed, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Leading through the front wall of the said box are drawers B, which said drawers are adapted to fill almost the entire space of the lower portion of the box when they are closed, whereby a very considerable drawer-space is provided. Hinged to the forward upper end of the said box is a shallow box-like compartment 0, and the bottom a of this said compartment is adapted to register longitudinally with the top A of the box A when the device is open, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This said bottom board 0 also acts as the top of the bureau when the device is closed, as illus- Serial No. 595,146. (No model.)
trated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. These two said portions are attached to each other by means of hinges 1).
Extended at right angles from one end of the box 0 is a plate 0, which said plate engages with corner-posts G which are extended into legs 0 for supporting the forward end of the bed,as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Extended over the inner surfaces of the boards A and 0, respectively, are slats E and E, which said slats are adapted to receive any suitable mattress or other bedding.
Mounted upon the plate C is a mirror F, which said mirror completes the appearance of the bureau when the device is folded and forms a useful part of the structure.
To finish up the appearance of the bureau, I provide upon the face thereof a door G, which is hinged to the board 0 and depends downwardly to obscure the bedding when the deviceis folded. This said door engages with projections g, formed upon the legs a. WVhen the device is open, the door engages with projections g, whereby access to the bureaudrawers is prevented. If it is desired to admit air to the bed when the device is closed, the said door Gmay be opened, butit can always be instantly closed to maintain the appearance of a bureau.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding bed of the character described, a deep box having bed-slats therein, a folding head-board upon the rear wall thereof, extended legs at the four corners thereof and sliding drawers therein, the hinged shallow compartment containing a series of bed-slats having posts thereon and a hinged cover for the front of the bureau, said cover being adapted to engage with the front of said deep box to prevent access to said drawers when the bed is open, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 2d day of June,1896.
MANUEL LEEANDREW COLLINS. lVitnesses:
THOMAS STUCKER, WILLIAM Tnonns SA'WYER.
