MEMORANDUM-BOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,405, dated March 23, 1897. Application iiled November G, 1896. Serial No. 611,253. (No model.)

Be it known that I, THOMAS hlcDownLL, of Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Memorandumooks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to mcinorand u iii-books or manifolding autographie tablets for salesmen; and the object of my invention is to provide a book or pad for salesniens use that will be simple, light, will produce three copies at one writing, and that can be carried in the pocket without undue wear or injury to the pocket.

My invention consists in the combination of a flexible back, a pile of flat leaves of substantially the same size as the back, each di vided into three sections by lines of perforations, staples securing the pile of leaves to the said back at or near one of the junctions of said sections, and a pair of carbon leaves secured to the pile of leaves at the same junction and extending` over the middle sections of the pile; and my invention consists also in other combinations, hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is an edge view of my improved book before the upperleaf is folded over the carbon-leaves. Fig. 2 is a top side view of the saine. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the book after the upper leaf has been folded over the carbon-leaves preparatory to making the copies. Fig. V4 is a top side view of the book as it appears after the upper leaf has been folded as shown in Fig. 3 5 and Fig. 5 is an edge view of a 1n odication wherein the sections of the leaves are of substantially the same size and the two carbon-leaves are of the saine size and not of different sizes, as represented in the other :ligures of the drawings.

Referring specifically to the drawings, A is the flexible back, of thick paper or leather.

B, B', and B are the sections oi' the pile of leaves, which are of substantially the same size and shape as the said flexible back A, and O and C' are the carbon sheets or leaves, lying upon thetop side .of the middle seetions B of the leaves. The sections of the leaves are preferably divided by lines of perforations b, b', and h", so that they may be easily and readily separated from each other after the copies have been made.

The stub portion d of the book, lying be tween the perforated lines l) and lJ, is narrow, and it is through this portion that the staples c c or other fasteners extend which secure the leaves and carbon-sheets together and fasten leaves are shorter than the other sections,

which brings the stub portion nearer the end of the tablet than when Athe sect-ions are of substantially equal length, as shown in Fig. lVhen the sections B are of substantially equal length, the carbon-leaves are of equal length; but when said sections are short, as illustrated in the first four ligures of the drawings, the upper carbon-leaf C is also short. The lower side only of the carbon-leaves are coated with carbon. The middle section B of a leaf is the custonicrs check, the end section B is the wrappers check, and the other end section B is the cashiers check. When not in use, the tablet is preferably folded over in the middle with the back A on the outside. When in use, it is first opened flat. Then the section B is folded over upon the carbon-leaf C, between the latter and the carbon-leaf O', and then the section B is turned or folded over the stub portion d and the carbon-leaf O, as shown clearly in Figs. 3 and el of the drawings, in which position the exposed surface of the section or sections receive the writing and produce the copies.

Then the cashiers check B" is short, it only receives the naine of the salesman and the date of the sale, the., but when it is long, as in Fig. 5, it also receives the items sold, together with amounts of sale, as an ordinary bill.

I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination of a flexible back, apile of flat leaves each divided into three sections with a stub portion between two of the sections, fasteners securing the stubs together and to the said back, the opposite ends of said leaves being free, and a pair of carbon-leaves,

secured to the pile of leaves by the said fasteners and lying upon the iniddle sections of the pile, as set forth.

2. The combination of a eXible back, a pile of flat leaves of substantially the saine size and shape as the back, each leaf being divided by perforated lines into three sections with a stub portion lying between two of said sections, staples passing through the stubs and the said back, the opposite ends of said leaves being free and a pair of carbon-leaves lying upon the stub portion and the middle section of the leaves, and also bound in place bythe staples, substantially as described and shown.

3. The combination of a flexible back, a pile of leaves, each leaf being divided by perforated lines into three sections and a stub, the stub lying between two of said sections, and one of said sections being about half the length of the other two sections, two carbonleaves lying upon each other upon the iniddle sections of the leaves, the upper carbonleaf being shorter than the other, and fasteners, as staples, passing through the carbonleaves, the stubs and the iexible back to secure the parts together, as set forth.
