SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 57 9,196, dated March 23, 1897. Application filed August 11, 1896. Serial No. 602,452. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM T. VALLAND- INGHAM,acitize11 of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Show Case or Cabinetfor Hosiery, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in show cases or cabinets for hosiery.
The object of the present invention is to provide forhosiery acase or cabinet adapted when closed to prevent access of dust to its parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
, In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a case or cabinet constructed in accordance with this invention and shown open. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View. the cabinet being closed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one of the hinged boxes or receptacles partly broken away to show the clamps for holding the hosiery in the receptacles.
Fig. 5 is a detail View illustrating the con- 'struction of the clamps.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a base provided at opposite sides with a series of shelves or ledges 2, arranged at different elevations and supporting two sets of oblong boxes or receptacles 3,
arranged endwise on the horizontal ledges or steps when they are folded, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawings. The bottoms of the boxes are. hinged at 4 to the outer edges of the steps orledges, whereby other,'as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanyin g drawings. The boxes or receptacles 3, which are preferably of the same size, are, when arranged in a horizontal position, open at the top, and when they are swung upward to a vertical position in folding one box is covered by the bottom of the adjacent box and the vertical or riser portions of the steps.
The base is provided with a central vertical partition 5, forming aparting-board which separates the two series of boxes or receptacles, and which operates to cover the open tops or sides of the uppermost receptacles or boxes of each set when the case or cabinet is closed.
Any suitable fastening device may be employed for securing the boxes or receptacles when closed, and the base is provided with a drawer 6, adapted to receive hosiery and arranged substantially in the same plane as the lowermost boxes or receptacles when the same are disposed in a horizontal position.
The hosiery is retained in the boxes or compartments, in convenient position for advantageous inspection, by resilient clamps 7 and 8, which prevent the hosiery from becoming mixed in the boxes or compartments when the same are closed and arranged in a vertical position. One or more series of clamps may be provided, according to the capacity of the boxes or receptacles, and each series of clamps is preferably constructed of a single piece of resilient wire bent to form a series of rectangular clamping-loops 9, coiled at opposite sides of the loops at 10 and extended at the outer ends of the coils 10 to form arms ll, which consist of narrow loops connecting the coils 10. The lower or inner series 8 of the clamps may be secured to the bottom of the boxes or receptacles, at a point intermediate of the ends thereof, by a transverse cleat 12, with the fastening device for securing the same to the boxes or receptacles passing through the intermediate arms 11, which form loops. The outer or upper series 9 of the clamps may be advantageously secured to the box or receptacle by a strip 13,
which passes through the coils 10, the arms of the series of clamps being disposed against the adjacent end of the box or receptacle.
It will be seen that the case or cabinet is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in con struction, that the boxes or receptacles are compactly arranged when folded and may be readily opened to display their contents, and that the hosiery may be conveniently examined without piling the same upon a counter.
It will also be apparent that a large quantity of hosiery may be rapidly displayed without actually handling the goods, and that it obviates the labor of folding and replacing the goods in small boxes incident to the ordinary manner of handling such goods.
What I claim is 1. A cabinet or case for displaying goods, comprising a base provided with a series of steps or ledges arranged at different elevations, and a series of open boxes or receptacles hinged at their lower ends to the outer edges of the horizontal portions of the steps or ledges, whereby,'when the boxes or receptacles are swung downward in opening they will be arranged at different elevations and will be supported one upon another, said boxes or receptacles, when arranged vertically, having their openings at their inner sides, so that one box or receptacle will be covered or closed by another, substantially as described.
2. A case or cabinet for displaying goods, comprising a base provided with a Verticallydisposed partition and having at opposite sides of the same a series of steps or ledges arranged at different elevations, an d two sets of boxes or receptacles disposed at opposite sides of the partition, mounted on the steps or ledges and hinged to the same at the outer edges thereof, said boxes being open at their inner sides and being arranged one above another when swung downward in ahorizontal position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM 'l. VALLANDINGHAM.
