CORNELIUS CHARLES EDGAR VAN ALSTINE, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE WASHINGTON GRAHAM, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,792, dated March 16, 18.97. Application tiled September 12,1896. Serial No. 605,620. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, CORNELIUS CHARLES EDGAR VAN ALSTINE, a citizen of the United States,residing in Paterson county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread- Twisters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact' description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide a doubler with means for twisting the threads to furnish a finished product, and thus avoid the necessity of subjecting the threads to the process of throwing, of simple, strong, and durable construction, reliable and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the improved doubler and its twisting means, and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an end elevation of a doubler of ordinary construction provided with my improvements, only those parts of the doubler being shown which are necessary to clearly illustrate the nature of my said invention; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail end elevation of the right-hand upper portion of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a detail front elevation of Fig. 2, with certain portions removed and others broken away. Figs. 4 and 5 are a front elevation and top plan View, respectively, of the twister and its supporting reciprocating bar; Fig. 6, an enlarged perspective view of the twister or spinner proper, and Fig. 7 a side elevation thereof.

On the reciprocating bar h5, which is provided at certain intervals (to correspond to the number of bobbins) with recesses h2o, are secured a series of 'bracket-plates 71.6 by means of the screws 7112 and 71.11, respectively, the latter ones penetrating elongated radial slots hw, arranged in their respective bracket-plates. Each of said bracket-plates h6 is provided with -a central groove or recess hm, in which the grooved pulley 718 is free to revolve, which pulley is mounted on the hollow shaft hl, having its bearings in the said bracket-plate and also in the cover hg of the latter. Said shaft 7i7 penetrates the recess h2o of the reciprocating bar h5 and projects beyond its rear surface.

The hollow shaft h7 and its pulley h8 are provided at one side with the open slots m3 and m2, respectively, of a size large enough to admit the insertion of the threads to be twisted. Said slots are capable of being brought in alinement with the slots m and m11, arranged in and penetrating one side of the bracket-plate h6 and its cover hg, respectively. On the forward end of the shaft hs is arranged a wire forming a loop m, which loop stands substantially in the center line of the hollow shaft and at right angles thereto. On the opposite end of said shaft h8 is also arranged a wire forming a loop m10, which latter is substantially in the center line of Said shaft and in alinement therewith.
By preference the hollow shaft h7 is lined with porcelain or any other suitable material to prevent the threads, while passing through, from becoming bruised or otherwise impaired.

The rods t t' are supported in the bracketframes a3, while the loop g is carried by the spring-wire g, which latter is arranged in such a manner that when the thread passing through its respective loop g' breaks it will drop down upon the lever f and thus throw the latter into engagement with one of the notches of the toothed wheel f and thus stop the rotation of the same and the shaft and bobbin connected therewith.
As the hollow shaft h7, carrying the loop m, (at right angles to the center line of said shaft,) is revolved the threads upon passing through said loop m are twisted together and in that form are wound upon the bobbin. When the twister is to be threaded, the slots m3 and m2 of the shaft h7 and pulley h8 are brought in alinement with the slots m' and m11 of the bracket-plate h6 and hg, respectively, as will be manifest.
I do not intend to limit myself to the precise construction shown and described, as various alterations can be made without changing the scope of my invention; but
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A twister or spinner, consisting of a frame, a hollow slotted shaft in said frame, a loop on one end of said shaft and arranged at right angles to the center line thereof, means on the end of t-he shaft for guiding the yarn clear of the slot and means for revolving said shaft, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A twister or spinner, consisting of a frame, a hollow slotted shaft in said frame, a loop on one end of said shaft and at right angles thereto, a loop on the other end of the shaft and in alinement with the center line thereof, and means for revolving said shaft, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. A twister or spinner, consisting of a frame, a hollow shaft in said frame and pro# vided with an elongated slot, a grooved pulley mounted on said shaft and also provided with a slot communicating and in alinement with the slot of the hollow shaft, a loop at one end of the shaft and at right angles thereto, and means for operating the pulley, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. A twister or spinner, consisting of a frame, a hollow shaft in said frame and provided with an elongated slot, a grooved pulley mounted on said lshaft and also provided with a slot communicating and in alinement with the slot in the hollow shaft, a loop arranged at one end of the shaft anddat right angles lto the center line thereof, a loop centrally arranged on the other end of the shaft and in alinement therewith, and means for operating the pulley, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
5. A twister or spinner, consisting of a frame provided at one side thereof with a slot, a hollow shaft arranged in said frame, a pulley on said shaft, said pulley and shaft being provided on one side with an open slot, capable of being brought in alinement with the slot in the frame, a loop arranged on one end of the shaft and at right angles to the center line thereof, a loop on the other end of the shaft and in alinement therewith, and means for operating the pulley, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
6. The combination with the reciprocating bar of a doubler, a bracket-plate adjustably arranged on said bar, means for locking said bracket-plate in its adjusted positions, a hollow shaft arranged in said bracket-plate, a loop on one end of the shaft -and at right angles thereto, and means for revolving said shaft, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
'7. The combination with abar,of a bracketplate arranged on and pivoted with one end to said bar and provided atits other end with an elongated slot, a spring controlling said bracket-plate, a pivoted lever adapted to lock said plate against the action of the spring when in normal position, and to engage the slot of said bracket when out of normal position, a hollow shaft arranged in said bracketplate, a loop on one end of said shaft and at right angles thereto, and means for revolving the shaft, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
8. The combination with a bar, of a bracketplate arranged on and pivoted with one end IOO IIO
to said bar and provided at its'other end with an elongated slot, a spring controlling said bracket-plate, a pivoted lever adapted to lock said plate against the action of the spring` When in normal position and to engage the slot of said bracket-plate when out of normal position, a hollow shaft arranged in said bracket-plate, a loop on one end of said shaft and at right angles thereto, a loop at the other end-of the shaft and in alinelnent With the center line thereof, and means for revolving the shaft, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
9. The combination with a bar, of a bracketplate arranged on said bar and provided at one side With a transverse open slot penetrating said bracket to about its center, a hollow shaft arranged in said bracket-plate, a pulley on said shaft, said pulley and shaft being provided at one side With an open slot, adapted vto be brought. in alinement with the transverse slot of the bracket-plate, a loop on one end of said shaft and at right angles thereto,
and means for revolving the pulley, all said 1l il parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
10. The combination with a bar,of a bracketplate arranged on said bar and provided at one side with a transverse open slot penetrating said bracket to about its center, aholloW shaft arranged in said bracket-plate, a pulley on said shaft, said pulley and shaft being` provided at one side with an open slot, adapted to be brought in alinement with the transverse slot of the bracket-plate, a loop on one end of said shaft and at right angles thereto, a loop at the other end of the shaft and :in alinement with the center line thereof, and means for revolving the pulley, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
