SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 251,429, dated December 27, 1881.

.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GADE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Twisting and \Vinding Up 'Yarn, Twine, 850., of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved machine for spinning, twisting, and winding up yarn, twine, 850., by means of a simple and economical apparatus, so as to do away with the cumbrous spinning machinery heretofore employed for this purpose; and the invention consists of the'combination, with a revolving twisting-frame which supports the winding-up spool, of a novel mechanism for guiding the twine or yarn to the spool, as hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the supporting-frame of my improved machine for spinning, twisting, and winding yarn or twine.
At the lower part of the supporting-frame A is supported the driving-shaft B, which transmits, by means of cone-pulleys a a and belts b b, respectively, motion to the shaft 0 of the revolving twisting-frame D and to a windingup spool, E, placed loosely upon the shaft of the twisting-frame D.
The shaft 0 of the revolving twisting frame D is extended beyond the head of the frame and supported in journal-bearings of standard O.
The spool E is placed inside of the frame D,
upon the shaft of the same, and is of nearly the same length as the frame D.
The twisting-frame D is formed of a diametrieal head, d, at one end, and of a ring-shaped head, at, at the other end, which are connected by longitudinal side bars, d
Along one side bar, d of the twisting-frame D is arranged a guide device, F, through which the thread or threads are passed before they are wound upon the spool E.
The guide device is of ring shape and placed upon a longitudinal screw-shaft, c, which turns in bearings in the heads d 01, respectively, so as to impart a longitudinally-traversing motion to the guide device.
Revolving motion is imparted to the screwshaft 0 of the tension device F by means of a series of intermeshing gears,fff f f which receive motion from a bevel gear, 9, fixed upon the standard 0, which meshes with a bevel-pinion, g, at the end of the small auxiliary worm-shaft 9 which turns gear f and the intermeshing gears, and extends radially from the hollow axle G and turns in bearings in the head d of the revolving frame D. The middle portion of the auxiliary shaft carries a worm, by which the motion is transmitted to the intermediate gearwheels and to the screw-shaft e of the guide device F.
For the purpose of reversing the motion of the guide device when the same arrives vertically above the ends of the spool, a shifting mechanism is provided, which consists ofa fulerumed elbow-lever, G, that passes through a slot of the head at and engages by its lower end an iutermediatelink, If, and thereby an arm,f of the supporting-platef, carrying the intermeshing twin pinionsf said plate being loosely pivoted upon the shaft of geanwheel f, as
shown clearly in Fig. 2, The opposite end of the elbow-lever G is engaged directly by a lug, h, of an auxiliary slotted slide-plate, H, which is guided by means of slots upon fixed studs or screws on one of the side bars, 01 of the revolving t ame D. v
Sidewise f the guide device F is arranged a strong U shaped band-spring, h,which, when arriving with theguide device at one end of the slotted slide-plate H, presses against the end of the same and shifts it toward the ringshaped head d of the twisting-frame as far as permitted by the guide-slots of the side plates, so as to move the fulcrumed elbow-lever G to one side, and shift thereby, by the link h connected with the arm f of the oscillating bearing-platef of the twin pinionsf one of the pinions out of and the other into gear with the motion-transmitting gear-wheels, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to reverse thereby the motion of the screw-shaft. When the guide device F arrives at the opposite end. of the spool, near the head 61 of the twisting-frame D, it comes into contact with the fulcrumed elbow -1evcr and causes the shifting of the twin pinions, so as to throw the former pinion into gear, as shown in Fig. 5, and reverse again themotion of the screw-shaft. A spring-pressed stop, i, enters into recesses Q1 of the slide-plate, and serves to regulate exactly the extent of shifting motion of the slide-plate. In this manner the guide device is reciprocated on the screwshaft, and its motion is automatically reversed whenever the guide device arrives at the ends of its motion. The thread or twine is thereby wound in a uniform manner upon the independently-revolving spool E.
When the machine is used for spinning the hemp or other fiber is fed by the attendant to the hollow extension shaft 0 until it passes out as a twisted yarn through an opening or eye at the inside of the revolving frame D. The yarnis then conducted through the guide device and onto the winding-spool. The rotary motion ofthe hollow shaft twists the yarn, which is gradually wound up by the spool.
When the machine is used fortwistingtwine, in place of the hemp or other fiber, several yarns are fed in through the hollow shaft from suitable spools, and are twisted together by running the machine in opposite direction to the direction in which it was running when twisting theyarn. The twisted twineis wound up on the spool in the same manner as the yarn.
A greater or less twist may be imparted to the yarn or twine, according as a greater or less speed is imparted to the hollow shaft and revolving frame, in which case the shifting device moves at corresponding speed, while the speed of the winding-spool is, by means of its separate cone-pulleys, arranged in proportion thereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a hollow shaft, a revoluble twisting-frame fixed to said shaft, a winding'up spool loose on said shaft, a driving-shaft provided withconepulleys, belts connecting said pulleys with the hollowshaft and spool, respectively, a traversing guide device on said twisting-frame, a rotary screw shaft for actuating said guide device, a fixed gear, intermediate gearing by which motion is transmitted from said fixed gear to the screw-shaft, a shifting slide-plate, a lever, and twin pinions for reversing the motion of the guide device, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the revoluble twisting-frame, of the traversing guide device F, having side springfli, slide-plate H, fulcrumed elbow-lever G, connecting-link 7L2, oscillating bearing f f", shifting-pinions f f gear f, transmitting-gearing in the head of the twisting frame, worm-shaft g gear 9, and fixed gear 9, substantially as described.
