BARREL-COVER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,768, dated March 16, 1897.

The object of my invention is to provide a barrel-cover which is light, cheaply made, and constructed of wood Without seam or joint upon its exposed surfaces; and it consists in the feature of construction, as hereinafter described, and set forth in the annexed claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A denotes a barrel-cover embodying my invention and consisting of an upper circular board 13, with its diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the barrel-head, so it will extend over and rest upon the ends of the staves of the barrel 0. The elongated openings II II are adapted to receive the thumb and fingers of the hand, and the recess E is sufiiciently deep to allow the thumb and fingers to be inserted beneath the handle I. The handle I is reinforced, when desired, in case-of heavy covers and the attaching-screws D relieved of strain by means of an iron rod J, extending across the handle H and bent at right angles, as at J. The ends of the rod pass through the rim G and are provided with screw-threads to receive the nuts K, which are screwed u p against the under side of the'board D and serve to attach it to the board B and also sustain the weight of the cover when it is lifted by the handle H.

The rod J may rest upon the upper surface of the board B or be recessed therein, as represented at J Fig. 3.

I am aware that it is not new to form a barrel-cover having central holes, as at H II, to receive the hand and also that such openings have been covered by a circular piece of sheet metal attached to the under side of the barrel-cover, thereby presenting a metal surface with a joint at its edge exposed upon the under side of the cover.

In my improved cover the board D is integral and nearly or quite fills the space between the ends of the barrel-staves, with the joint between the rim G and the upper board 13 not directly exposed to the contents of the barrel.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The within-described cover consisting of a circular board B, provided with a pair of parallel elongated openings H, H, forming a handle I between them, and a circular board D of less diameter than the board B and provided with a circular concentric recess E on one side forming a rim G at its edge, said rim G being united to the under side of said board B, substantially as described.

2. In a barrel-cover the combination of a circular board B provided with elongated openings 11 II and a handle I, a circular board D attachedconcentrically to said board B and provided with a recess E, a rod J extending lengthwise across said handle I and having its ends bent and passing through said boards B and D, and nuts K held upon the ends of said rod whereby said boards B and D are attached, substantially as described.
