SAFETY-BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,338, dated March 9, 1897. Application filed October 23, 1896. Serial No. 609,833. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY SHERI- DAN JENISON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Apponaug, county of Kent, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety- Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to that class of safetybottles which are designed to prevent unauthorized refilling or reuse of the bottle; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved bottle of this class which will be inexpensive in construction and especially convenient and eifective in the purpose for which it is designed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bottle embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the neck and looking upwardly. Fig. 4is a side view of the cap. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan view of the cap.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the neckof the bottle, which may be in the mam of any ordinary or adapted constructlon and is provided on diametrically opposite sides, at a suitable point below the mouth, with laterally-projecting nibs or studs a a.
B designates a cap which conforms to and is adapted to fit over the mouth portion of the neck of the bottle and is provided upon its bottom edge with oppositely-arranged downwardly-projecting nibs or fingers b b.
The nibs b are arranged at opposite sides of the cap and to one side of the transverse central plane of the cap, (see Fig. 5,) so that they will engage the diametrically opposite laterally-projecting nibs a upon the neck when the cap is inserted in position.
The neck and cap-piece with their relatively-projecting nibs or studs are formed of glass or other fragile material, and in practice after the bottle is filled and it is desired to close or seal the same the nibs or fingers of the cap-piece are heated to a degree which will render them pliable when they are bent under and around the laterally-proj ectin g nibs a of the neck, thus securely locking the cap in position.
hen it is desired to withdraw the contents of the bottle, it is only necessary to break the binding nibs or fingers b, when the cap can be readily removed. The destruction of the nibs upon the cap-piece thus precludes unauthorized reuse or refilling of the bottle.
In the practical construction of my invention I prefer to have the nibs b of the cap piece of less diameter or of aweaker or more fragile'construction than the nibs upon the neck, so that in the opening of the bottle only the cap-piece nibs will be broken, thus permitting the reuse of the bottle proper in the hands of an authorized manufacturer by the use of new cap-pieces.
I prefer to broaden or enlarge the cap-piece at the portion carrying the nibs or fingers b, as shown at e, to provide greater strength or endurance in the operation of heating and securing the nibs of the cap-piece in locked position.
The mouth portion of the neck is preferably of conical shape, as shown, and the interior of the inclosing cap is also of corresponding conical contour and incloses and closely fits the neck, whereby the cap-piece.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. 'An improved safety-bottle, comprising the neck portion having the laterally and 0ppositely projecting nibs or studs; in combination with a cap-piece adapted to fit upon and close the mouth of the neck and provided with downwardly-projecting nibs 'or fingers formed of glass or other fragile material'a'nd adapted to be permanently sealed around the nibs upon the neck, substantially the purpose set forth.
2. In an improved safety-bottle, comprising the conical neck portion having the diametrically opposite laterally-projecting nibs or studs, the combinationtherewith of a capas andfor piece fitting and inclosing the mouth portion of the neck and provided on its bottom edge with oppositely-arranged nibs or fingers projecting downwardly from a point to one side the transverse central plane of the cap and formed of glass or other fragile material, said nibs or fingers being adapted to be permanently sealed around the nibs upon the neck, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the neck of a bottle, comprising the neck portion having lateral projections; With a cap adapted to inclose the mouth of said neck portion and provided with exterior bottom projections formed of glass or analogous fragile material and adapted to be permanently sealed in engagement With the projections upon the neck by heating, whereby said fragile projections must be broken in the operation of opening the bottle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. As an improved article of manufacture, a safety-bottle comprising the neck having a conical mouth portion and lateral nibs or projections on opposite sides thereof and formed in its entirety of glass or analogous fragile material, and a corresponding cap-piece closing the mouth portion of said neck and provided With exterior bottom nibs or projections permanently sealed in engagement with the projections upon the neck, the cap-piece be: ing formed in its entirety of glass or analogous fragile material, and having its bottom portion thicker at the sides from which the nibs project, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
5. An improved safety-bottle, comprising in combination with the neck having lateral nibs or projections; a cap-piece inclosing the mouth of said neck and provided With exterior bottom nibs or projections formed of glass or analogous fragile material of lesser thickness than the bottom of the cap and permanently sealed around the nibs upon the neck, whereby disconnection of the cap-piece from the neck can only be effected by breaking said fragile sealing nibs or projections, substaniiallyras and for the purpose set forth.
