Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEc A Y ALVIN G. SQUIRE, CF PELHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFCTURE OF SCYTHEHSTONES.
i Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,790, dated September 4, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN G. SQUIRE, of Pelham, in the county of Hampshire, in the Commonwealth of Massachusettsl.- have invented a new and Improved Instrument for Sharpening Scythes for Cutting Grass, Grain, and Bushes, and other edge-tools and implements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in making a groove about one-eighth of an inch in width and depth lengthwise around a common Scythe-stone or scythe-ritle, which is a thin piece of wood about three-eighths ot' an inch in thickness and about one and a half inch in width and about twelve inches in length, with a handle at one end, and covered with glue or shellac, and coated with emery, and
inserting. in said groove, so as to encircle the whole stone or wood, a cast-steel band, which is closely fitted to and iills the groove, and projects outward and about one-sixteenth of an inch above the face of the stone or wood.
After the tool or instrument to be sharpened is rubbed with the stone or wood so coated with glue or shellac and emery, the edge is burnished with the steel band, so as to give it a smoother and more perfect edge.
What I claim as my invention is- The cast-steel band and the mode 0I' attaching it to the stone or wood prepared as above stated, and to be used, in connection with such stone or wood, for the purpose of sharpening scythes, edge-tools, and other implements requiring a sharp edge.
' ALVIN G. SQUIRE. Witnesses:
