SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,541, dated February 23, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAULWVAGEMANN, a sub: ject of theEmperor of Germany, residing at Moringen, Province of Hanover, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrup-Detaching Devices, of

which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to detaching devices for stirrups; and said invention consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Heretofore stirrup-bars have been devised which were intended to automatically operate to release the stirrups from the saddle in case the rider was thrown and a pressure exerted upon the fastening of the stirrup-bar in a given direction. Such devices have,

however, proven very unsatisfactory because of the failure thereof to work at the proper time or because of the liability thereof to operate to release the stirrups when it is not intended to release them.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which represent one form of my invention, and wherein like letters indicate corresponding parts in the various views, Figure 1 is a side view of a saddle embodying a stirrup -detaching device made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail face view of the detaching device, the parts being shown in the locked position. Fig. 3 is a like view of the same with the parts in the released positions. Fig. 4 is a fragmental side view of a detail to be hereinafter described.

The saddle proper in the accompanying drawings is indicated by the letter A. To

this saddle is attached the stirrup-disconnecting device B, which supports the stirrup by means of the stirrupstrap a. The stirrup-disconnecting device comprises the threesided frame (Z d, to which is pivoted the stirrup-bar e. The free end of this stirrup-bar is secured in the locked position in the apertured end a; of the releasing-latch f, which is normally maintained in the locked position by the leaf-spring g. The releasing-latch f is provided with a hook-like projection h. To this hook-like projection may be secured a chain 1', which constitutes a releasing-latchoperating mechanism. passes through suitable rings y, carried by the saddle, to apoint at or near the pommel and may there be connected with a springlatch j, which tends normally to retain the parts in their relative positions, as indicated in Fig. 1. The releasing-latch chain tis also preferably connected with a lash c, which is intended to pass around the person of the rider.

If for any reason it is desired to release the stirrups, a pull upon the chain 2 will cause the spring-latch j to be withdrawn from the eye or ring in which it is secured, and the releasing-latch will be turned on its pivot, as shown in Fig. 3, thereby releasing the stirrup-bare, which disengages the stirrup-strap a from its support. Should the rider by any accident be thrown from the saddle, it will be observed that the same result will follow and that the releasing-latch-0perating chain t will, when the stirrup-bar is released,be allowed to automatically disconnect itself from the hook h, to which it has been connected, and may move freely from the saddle through the rings 1 It will further be seen that the side d of the frame of the supporting device prevents the stirrup-strap from opening the releasing-latch by a direct pressure thereon and that the stirrups can only be released or disconnected by means of the latch-operating chain t'.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l 1. The combination of a stirrup-bar, a releasing-latch therefor, latch-operating mechanism entirely independent of the saddle and its connections and means for connecting said latch-operating mechanism with the releasing-latch when the latter is in the locked position and for disconnecting said latch-operating mechanism from the releasing-latch when the latch is in the releasing position, said releasing-latch-operating mechanism being under the control of the rider for throwing the releasing-latch and thereby disconnecting the stirrup from the saddle.

2. The combination of a stirrup-bar, a releasing-latch therefor, latch-operating mechanism and means carried by the releasinglatch for securing the latch-operating mechanism thereto when the parts are in the locked I: hook on the releasing-latch, whereby when the pal-ts are in the locked position the releasing-chain will he connected with the releasing-latch and will be automatically released therefrom when the parts are in the unlocked position.
