Description

No. 761,865. PATEN-TED FEB. 9, 1904. J. MARTIN. MEANS FOR AT'IAGHING STIRRUP LBATHERS T0 RIDING SADDLES.
N B W- UNITED STATES Patented February 9, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
JEAN MARTIN, OF GRASSE, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO JEAN HONORE EDOUARD CRESP, OF GRASSE, FRANCE.
MEANS FOR ATTACHING STlRRUP-LEATHERS TO RIDlNG-SADDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,865, dated February 9, 1904.
Application filed July 9, 1903. Serial No. 164,803. (No model.)
To (all whom, it vim/,7 concern.-
Be it known thatI, J EAN MARTIN, merchant, of Chalet Elisabeth, Avenue des Casernes, Grasse, Alpes-Maritimes, Republic of France, have invented Improvements in Means for Attaching Stirrup-Leathers to Riding-Saddles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the present invention is to construct a support for stirrup-leathers in which when the rider falls from his horse and his foot remains in the stirrup the stirrupleather becomes detached from the saddle by the weight of the rider.
The accompanying drawings show the principle, by way of example only, of this support for stirrup-leathers.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the strapsupporting member and of the carrying-plate by which it is attached to the saddle. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the carrying-plate, partly in section. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the strapsupporting member in its open position.
In all the figures the same reference-letters indicate like parts.
The self detaching support for stirruplcathers, as shown in Fig. 1, comprises the following parts: A plate (0, provided with holes by which it is fixed to the saddle and having at its lower part a socket 6, formed with a conical hole, the other part forming the strap-supporting member at c f. The part in forms a conical teat, which enters the socket b. c is the part which carries the stirrup-leather. o is the hinge-pin, the center plate of the hinge having a recess in one side thereof. f is the clasp provlded with a sprlng r, the lower end of which enters the recess in the hinge-plate when the clasp is closed.
The advantages of the apparatus made in accordance with the present invention are that the rider when in the saddle may bear thrown and his foot is caught in the stirrup the stirrup-leather pulling obliquely backward the part m will slide out of the socket (Z and cause the clasp f to open immediately, as shown in Fig. 3. The rider in falling causes the strap-supporting member to open by his own weight and the backward pull.
A device of the class described, comprising a plate having a conical socket formed-thereon, a strap-supporting member formed with a conical shank portion designed to seat in said socket, and a spring tension locking-bar pivoted to the strap-supporting member, said locking-bar being adapted to open away from the strap-supporting member to permit the disengagement of said member from the socket, substantially as set forth.
The foregoing specification of my improvements in means for attaching stirrup-leathers to riding-saddles signed by me this 17th day of June, 1903.
JEAN MARTIN.
