UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLEN R. PARKISON, OF MONONGAHELA CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY-STlRRU P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,259, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed August- 31, 1886. Serial No. 212,334.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, ALLEN 'R. PARKISON, of Monongahela City, in the county of WVashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Stirrup,of which thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction of a safety-stirrup wherein the parts are, so arranged that should the rider be thrown from the horse his foot will be released from the stirrup, while the pressure of the foot upon. the side of the stirrup will cause the CllS('Ol1- nection ot' the stirrup from the stirrup strap or leather.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a side View of my improved form of stirrup, representing the same as detached from the stirrup strap or leather; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line as w of Fig. 1, the strap, however, being shown in position and not in section.
The stirrup illustrated in the drawings consists of a tread, 10, that is made integral with the side bow,11,said bow being continued outward over and downward to constitute the head 12. To the opposite end of the tread there is hinged a movable how, 13, the upper end of which carries a pin, 14, which passes through an extension, 15, formed upon the arm 2 of the head 12.
Within the head of the stirrup there is loosely mounted a shaft, 16, which carries a rack, 17, said rack being rectangular, as illustrated, and its upper parallel arm is provided with pins or hooks 3. A slot, 4., is formed in the head of the stirrup, this slot being shown in Fig. 2, while its position is indicated in Fig. 1. The stirrup strap or leather 20 is passed through the slot 4 and carried downward beneath the lower length of the rack 17, then upward and into engagement with the (No model.)
hooks or pins 3 of the upper link of said rack. After the leather has been secured, as described, the rack is moved to a position so that the pin 14 will enter an aperture,5,f0rnied near the lower end of that side length of the rack that is adjacent to the open side of the stirrup.
From the construction described it will be seen that the strap 20 may be permanently secured to the saddle, the length of the strap beingregulated at the stirrup instead of at the saddle, as has heretofore been done.
This stirrup constitutes a safety-stirrup in every respect, for should a rider be thrown the pressure of his foot will move the side arm,13,to the position in which it is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and this moving of the side arm will release the rack 17, so that it will be free to rotate should the stirrup be subjected to any pull; and when the rack ro tates, the strap or leather 20 will be disconnected therefrom, and consequently the stirrup will be disconnected from the said strap or leather.
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and, desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combinatiomin a stirrup, of the rack mounted within the head of the stirrup, for the attachment of a strap, pins or hooks carried by the rack, anda locking attachment from one of the side bows, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the stirrup, of a hinged section, 13, provided with the pin 14, a rack,17, mounted upon a shaft, 16, and arranged within the head of the stirrup, and pins 8, carried by the rack, which rack is arranged to be engaged by the pin 14 of the section 13, substantially as described.
ALLEN R. PARKISON.
