H. H. BENNETT.
'- SYRINGE NOZZLE.
9 No. 577,524. Patented Feb, 23, 1897 WITNESSES..- [NI/EN TOR ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. BENNETT, OF FREEHOLD, NEW JERSEY.
SYRlNGE-NOZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,524, dated February 23, 1897'. Application filed January 15, 1896. Serial No. 575,565. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Freehold, Monmouth county, New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Syringe-Nozzles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of the nozzle of a syringe which is especially intended and adapted to be used as a vaginal syringe; and the general object of my invention is to provide the nozzle with a means for holding the part of the person in or upon which the nozzle may be used in an expanded condition in the operation of the syringe.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a side view of a nozzle embodying my invention. Fig. II represents a front end View thereof. Fig. III represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. IV represents a cross-section thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
The letter A indicates a tube forming the body of the syringe, its one end being closed and the other provided with a flange A for connecting thereto a rubber tubing, from whence the syringe is to receive the desired supply of Water or other liquid. The end of said tube A opposite to the flange A is closed, except as to a series of orifices A at that point, and the tube is further provided with orifices A at divers points throughout its length, the same being usually arranged in fixed relation to side bars, to be next described.
Surrounding the tube A are a series of bars B, in this example four in number, which extend longitudinally of and parallel to the axis of the tube, and each of which is united to the tube at its opposite ends. In practice these side bars B are formed integral with the tube A, of india-rubber or other suitable material, and so as to extend from a point at or near the closed end of the tube to one near the rear open end thereof, and the same are normally in parallelism with the tube and unyielding laterally to the tube, except as to their inherent elasticity. Each of the side bars B is equidistant to the other from the axis of the tube, and hence the bars jointly present an approximately cylindrical plane throughout the length of the nozzle where it contacts with the walls of the vagina or other part. Said plane with suitable orifices both at its outer end andlongitudinally thereof, and in order to afford a more free escape of liquid therefrom the tube may be shaped to diverge from the inner toward the outer or leading end, as shown in the drawings.
From this description it will be readily understood that when the nozzle is introduced into the vagina or other desired part to be treated the side bars B will act on the walls thereof with a tendency to hold the part in an expanded or dilated condition for permitting a very free and effective entrance as well as exit of the liquid to and therefrom.
In defining the scope of my invention I would remark that I am aware that a syringenozzle has heretofore been provided with side bars to be adjusted in relation to the axis of the tube forming the body of the article. This construction of the bars necessitates an adj ustment of parts when the nozzle is applied to use and is a disadvantage which is overcome by my invention by the permanent arrangement of the side bars upon the nozzle.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A nozzle for a syringe, consisting of-a tube open at one end and closed at the other end and gradually expanding in size from its open to its closed end, said closed end conforming in section to the arc of a circle, side ribs rigidly attached to the closed end of said tube and projecting a short distance outward therefrom as an extension of the are forming the end of the tube, and then parallel to each other longitudinally of the tube to near the open end thereof, and then inward to the tube, to
which the ends are rigidly connected, and suit- 5 able perforations in the end of the tube and the sides thereof between the ribs, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY H. BENNETT.
