ELASTIC STOCKING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,154, dated November 29, 1881, Application filed August 31, 1881. `(Model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID D. M. MASTER, of Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elastic Stockings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art 'to which it appertains to make and use the same, 1o reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specitication.

Figure l is a side view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line x, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of one of my improved stockings.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to elastic stockings and other bandages for various lnedical and 2o surgical purposes; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Elastic bandages as heretofore constructed 2 5 have been open to a serious objection-viz., that in pulling them on or oft' they would stretch longitudinally or in the direction of the pull, thus impairing the lateral or circumferential elasticity, making the adjustment diflicult and painful, and causinga very considerable and unnecessary wear to the article. By my present invention these objections are removed or reduced and a superior and desirable article furnished. 3 5 In the drawings hereto annexed, Arepresents my invention as applied to an elastic stocking, which is made, in the usual manner, of any suitable elastic fabric, silk, cotton, or other material being employed as a covering for the elastic strands or threads, which are woven in the usual manner, so as to form a suitable porous fabric. Along the entire length of the cylindrical or tubular fabric formin g the stockingleg I secure, on each side, a pair of non-elastic but flexible stays, B B, which absolutely prevent any longitudinal stretching of the elasticfabric, while the lateral expansion is in no wiseimpaired. By this construction the stockin g or bandage may be easily and painlessly pulled on or off, and the wear caused by the 5o longitudinal pull upon the material is entirely avoided.

The longitudinal strips or stays B may be stitched or otherwise secured upon the outside of the tubular fabric, or they may be woven therein, if so preferred. The latter construction may be preferably, but not necessarily, adopted.

I am aware of the patent to Molesworth for improvements in dilators, granted December 6o 1, 1874. This is a rubber bag provided with longitudinal inelastic cords or wires, to prevent longitudinal expansion when the bag is inflated. This, however, is not only a different article, but so far different from the present invention that express provision is made for the prevention of lateral expansion at the end, which is absolutely necessary in this case.

I am also aware that a longitudinal inelastic stay has been and is being used upon the 7o back of elastic stockings. This I have evenv shown in the drawings hereto annexed. Itis evident, however, that such stay is utterly inefficient for thepurpose of preventing longitudinal stretching when the stocking is pulled 7 5 on or off, the pull being on the sides and evenly distributed. N or would a single stay on each side answer, because in order to render it of any use it would have to be so wide as to interfere with the porosity of the bandage. The 8o non-porous dilating bag and the single stay I disclaim; but,

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an article of manufacture, an elastic porous tubular bandage provided on each side with a pair of narrow non-elastic but flexible longitudinal stays, as described, for the purpose set forth. 9o
