Description

UNITED Y STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID 1). M. MASTER, OF nnusiame, NEW YORK.
ELASTIC STOCKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,180, dated March 21, 1882.
I Application filed February 4, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID D. M. MASTER, of Flushing'.in the countyof Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulIniprovementsin Elastic Stockings; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to elastic stockings and similar bandages; and it consists in certain improvements in the same, which will he hereinafter fully described, with reference to the drawings hereto annexed, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved elastic stocking; and Fig. 2 is a side view, illustrating amodification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
My present invention is an improvementon the device for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 250,154 were granted to myself, on the 29th day of November, 1881. In the said patent the elastic stocking was provided on each side with a pair of longitudinal, flexible, but non-elastic stays to prevent it from expanding longitudinally in adjustingit upon the limb.
My present invention consists in supplying the sides of the stocking, in addition to the longitudinal stays, with a series of loops or straps, located at suitable intervals and forming handles, which may be convenientlygrasped when the stocking is put on,thus enablingthis to be done without straining the entire length of the fabric at any one time.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the elastic stocking; and B B,the longitudinal, flexible, but non-elastic stays secured to the side of the same.
0 O are straps, having their ends attached to the stays B, as shown, so as to form loops orhandles, which maybe convenientlygrasped when the stocking is to be pulled on. ()f the straps or loops 0 two or more may be secured at suitable intervals, to each side of the stocking, so that it maybe pulled on or adjusted in sections, as it were, without at any time exercising a longitudinal strain upon the entire fabric.
Instead of securing the ends of the strapsO to both of the stays B, as in Fig. 1, both ends 7 may be attached to the same stay, as in Fig.
2. By this construction substantially the same result is attained, with this difference, that the stay alone or upon both stays independently or simultaneously, as required.
ily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. Elastic stockings and similar handages are necessarily made to fit the limb very'tightly, and much diflicnlty has been exmentthe strain or pull maybe exercised upon The advantagesof myinvention will be readperieneed in putting them on. By my improve.
strain or draft may be exercised upon either a small section at a time, thus making the stocking or bandage more easily adjusted, with less liability to tear and injure it.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the
