CARPET-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,201, dated February 16, 1897. Application filed Tune 29, 1896- Serlal No. 597,408. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY OBERJOHANN, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Carpet-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to a carpet-fastener, and has for its object to provide a fastener of inexpensive construction and ornamental appearance adapted to hold the carpet in proper tension without the use of tacks or other fastenings, by which the carpet may be laid and secured or removed without injury to the carpet or floor.

The essential elements of the invention will be hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a section of base-board and floor having a carpet secured in place by my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the fastening-plate, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the eccentrically-headed holding-screw.

1 designates the clamping-plate, formed with a longitudinal groove 2 upon its upper face centrally of its width and grooved longitudinally in the arc of a circle to allow the revolution of the circular eccentric head 3 of Screw 4 is formed with a head 3 eccentric to the body of the screw, whereby the eccentric portion may be turned to engage with the inner wall of the groove 2 of the plate to hold the plate from lateral movement and to engage With the bottom curved portion of the groove to pressthe plate firmly upon the carpet and to prevent longitudinal movement of the plate upon the carpet.

In operation the screws 4 are screwed into the base-board the proper distance from the floor to allow of inserting the plate beneath the head of the screw when the greatest eccentricity is upward, when upon properly stretching the carpet the plate is rested thereon beneath the screw and the screw is turned to cause the eccentric portion to enter the groove and press the plate upon the carpet.

It will be seen that in the use of the fastener the necessity of the use of tacks is dispensed with and the carpet can be conveniently removed for dusting or cleaning and as readily laid and secured.

What I claim is- In a carpet-fastener, a plate curved in crosssection and provided with a longitudinal groove upon its upper face, said groove being curved longitudinally in the arc of a circle, and a screw having an eccentric head of a size to enter the groove in the plate and engage with the sides of the groove to hold the plate from lateral movement and to engage with the curved bottom of the groove to press the plate downwardly and to prevent lon gitudinal movement of the plate.
