Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL XV. TOWVER, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE GRAND RAPIDS BRASS COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESK-LID SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,972, dated February 9, 1897.
- Application filed May 22, 1896. Serial No. 592,658. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. TOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent open position for use is firmly supported.
The invention is illustratedby the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel shows a sectional View of a desk with the lid open, showing the pivotal connection between the supporting-arm and the lid and the plate connection between the upper end of the supporting-arm and the end of the desk-case. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the desk-lid support, together with the pivotal connection and plate, the same being detached from the desk. Fig. 3 shows an edge view of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a plan view from the inner side of the connecting-plate, with a portion cut away in order to show the locking projection H, which is adapted to retain the upper end of the supporting-arm in position.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the desk or case to which my invention is applied.
13 represents the lid when opened, as shown in the drawings.
0 represents the pivotal connection between the lid and the supporting-arm.
E represents the attaching-plateand guide for the upper end of the supporting-arm D. The plate E is constructed with an offset projection G, containing a slot or opening in which the lid-supporting arm D is susceptible of sliding lengthwise, so that the arm moves along one side of the plate E, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3. The offset projection G is constructed with two oppositely-arranged bent flanges G, which lap around the opposite parallel edges of the arm D and retain this arm and the offset projection G of the plate E in proper relative position at all times. The desk-supporting arm D is pivoted at one end to the pivotal connection or plate 0 and at its opposite end is formed or provided with a shoulder or offset F, constituting a stop which is adapted to strike one edge of the slot in the offset projection G when the desk-lid is swung to its open position, as in Fig. 1. The engagement of the stop F with the offset projection .G of the plate E serves to firmly support the desk-lid when it is thrown open for use. Theplate E is also provided with a projecting lip H, lying substantially in the plane of the plate and adapted to bear against one surface of the supporting-arm D, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 2. Y
L represents the screw or bolt which attaches the plate E to the side of the case, and in the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the plate E oscillates upon the bolt or screw L as the desk-lid is raised and lowered, thereby preventing absolutely the supporting-arm D from binding in the Way in plate E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the hinged lid of adesk, of a guide-plate connected with the desk-case and having a slotted offset projection provided with opposite bent flanges G, and a lid-sustaining arm slidable under said bent flanges and through said offset projection, said arm being pivoted at one end portion to the desk-lid and havingan offset-stop at its other end portion which strikes the slotted ofiset projection of the guide-plate and firmly supports the desk-lid when the latter is thrown open for use, substantially as described. Y
2. The combination with a desk and desklid of a lid-supporting arm pivoted at one end to-the lid a supporting-plate pivoted upon the desk and havingaprojecting bracket prohand and seal in the presence of two Witvided With away or guide for the1id-s11pp01't messes.
in arm a stop on one end of the said desk- 1 1 1 lid suppprt to engage a projection on the piv- DANHL 1 OWER 5 oted plate and serve as a stop, substantially WVitnesses:
as described.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my EDWARD TAGGART, CHRISTOPHER I-IONDELINK.
