E. BAILEY, SHEARS 0R SGISSORS.
v No.576,938.' PatentedFeb Q, 1897.
zzi f un I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELI BAILEY, OF KEOKUK, IOIVA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF TWO-THIRDS TO SARAH BAILEY, OF SAME PLACE.
SHEARSOR SCISSORS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 576,938, dated February 9, 1897.
Application filed November 16,1896. Serial No. 612,246. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELI BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keokuk, in the county of Lee, State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shears or Scissors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of shears or scissors wherein there is a lever applied to the pivot-pin, one end of which rests upon one of the blades and the other end of which is provided with means for adjusting it so as to bind the two blades together with more or less pressure.
The object of my present invention is to provide the lever with a simple device by which it is secured to the pivot-pin, and a device that will always accompany the lever and not be liable to be lost.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I shows in elevation a pair of shears or scissors with my invention applied. Fig. II is an enlarged detail side view. Fig. III is an enlarged transverse section taken on line III III, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a detail view showing the central part of one of the blades, and Fig. V is a similar view showing the central part of the other blade.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents one of the blades of the shears or scissors, and 2 the other blade. 3 represents the pivot-pin, provided at one end with a head t and at the other end with a perforation or hole 5. 6 represents a lever, preferably made of spring steel, and which is provided with a perforation to receive the hole end of the pin 3. One end of this lever is turned down, as shown at 7, Fig. II, and bears against the blade 2 forward of the pivot 3. The other end of the lever is provided with a recess 8 to receive the inner end of the thumb-screw 9, that is passed through the handle part ofthe blade 2 back of the pivot.
I have shown my invention applied to a pair of shears or scissors having the raised bearing-surfaces set forth in my Patent No. 524, 67 3, dated August 14, 1894, and I have also shown in the drawings one of these bearingsurfaces extended forward of the pivot, as set forth in my application filed October 21, 1896, Serial No. 609,568.
10 represents a hook pivoted to the lever 6, preferably by having an inturned end 11 riveted in an opening formed in the lever, as shown in Fig. II. The point of this hook is adapted to fit in the perforation 5 of the pin 3, and thus hold the lever 6 into engagement with the pin.
WVhen it is desired to separate the blades to clean or sharpen them, the hook 10 is simply swung back on its pivot out of engagement with the perforation 5 and remains connected to the lever, so that there is no danger of its becoming mislaid or lost, and the body of the hook forms a convenient leverage, against which the finger may be pressed to disengage the point of the hook from the pin. After the blades have been cleaned or sharpened, the pivot-pin is slipped in place, the lever applied, the hook caused to engage the perforation in the pin, and the set-screw 9 tightened to give the proper friction between the blades.
I claim as my invention 1. In a pair of shears or scissors, the combination with the blades of a pivot-pin or pintle provided with a perforation, a lever adapted to fit over the pin and to bear at one end against one of the blades forward of the pin, means for adjusting the other end of the lever, and a hook pivoted to the lever and parallel threwith and the point of which is adapted to enter the perforation in the pin, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pair of shears or scissors, the combination of the blades, a pivot-pin provided at one end with a perforation and at the other end with a head, a lever adapted to fit over the pin, a set-screw for tightening one end of the lever, and a hook arranged parallel with the lever having an inturned end riveted into a perforation in one end of the lever and the point of which is adapted to fit in the perforation of the pin, substantially as set forth.
ELI BAILEY.
