Be it known that I, B ssIE A. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States,residin'g at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Medicine-Time Indicators for Glasses, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, efficient, and economical device particularly designed to be used as a cover for an ordinary medicine-glass and to indicate the exact time that medicine should be administered or taken by a patient or person under treatment.
The invention also has for its object to provide a new and improved foldable device d'esigned to cover a medicine-glass and to inclicate or show when a dose of medicine should be administered or taken, and which is susceptible of either standing approximately perpendicular to be readily inspected or observed or folding into approximately flat and compact form either while on the glass or when removed therefrom.
The invention consists, essentially, in a cover constructed to fit over the mouth of a medicineglass and having a disk or plate provided with numerals indicating hours and a disk or plate provided with a notch or opening to expose the numeral or numerals indicating any desired hour, one of the disks or plates being rotatable, so that the hour numeral or numerals can be made visible through said notch or opening.
The invention also consists in a flanged cover for a medicine-glass having a time-indicator hinged or pivoted thereto, so that it can be adjusted to stand approximately perpendicular or be folded down upon the cover when not in use. I
The invention also consists in other features of construction and in the combina tion or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my improved Inedicine-time indicator applied to a medicine-glass. In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring to the drawings, wherein The numeral 1 indicates a flattened cover 7 5 having a surrounding marginal flange or rim 2 and so constructed that it may be placed over the mouth of a medicine-glass, so that the flange or rim encircles the outside of the glass and prevents the cover from being shifted from position, while effectually closin g the glass and protecting the contents from exposure to the atmosphere, dust, dirt, and the like.
The cover is preferably made in the form of a disk, because ordinarily glasses are circular in cross-section. The outer or upper surface of the cover is provided with a disk or plate 3, secured at the center by a tubular rivet or pivot-pin 4, and having its periphery 9o constructed with a notch or opening 5.- adapted to expose characters placed upon the cover to indicate the quantity of medicine which is to be administered or taken. The cover, for example, will be supplied at two different 5 points with the necessary instructions, which may be printed, written, or otherwise placed thereupon. For instance, one part of the cover will be provided with the words One spoonful and another part with the words Two spoonfuls, either of which set of words can be exposed through the notch or opening 5 of the disk 3, while the latter covers and' conceals the other set of words. As regards this part of the device, however, reference is made to Fig. 8 of the drawings, wherein the cover is provided with a spring-clip 7 under which a card or paper bearing the necessary instructions as to quantity may be placedavhereby the instructions may be changed from time to time as occasion may demand. It will be obvious also that a card or paper bearing the required instructions could be inserted under the disk 3, and thus be conspicuous for the convenience of the nurse or patient.
The cover is provided at one edge with ashank or support 8, connected thereto through the medium of a suitable hinge 9, arranged at a little distance from one end of the shank or support, so that a tailpiece 10 is provided on the latter. The shank or support is provided'with a tubular rivet or pivot-pin 12, on which are mounted the disks or plates 13, 14,-, and 15, which are of diiferent diameters or size. The disk or plate 13, which is the greatest in diameter or size, is constructed with a serrated or toothed periphery 16, adapted to be engaged by the fingers or the finger-nails, so that this disk or plate can be rotated or turned on or with the tubular rivet or pivotpin 12.
The front face of the disk or plate 13 is provided near its periphery with a circular row of numerals indicating the hours from 1 to 12, inclusive, while the disk 14, which is of less diameter than the dial-disk 13, is constructed in its periphery with a notch or opening 17, through which the numeral or numerals indicating a certain hour may be exposed to view, while all other numerals are concealed. The face of the disk 14 is provided near its center with a circular row of numerals indicating minutes, and preferably these numerals are divided to show quarters of an hour.
The disk or plate 15, which is of comparatively smaller diameter, is provided in its periphery with a notch or opening 18, through which the numerals indicating the quarters of an hour may be exposed to view, so that, for instance, the numeral 5 on the disk or plate 13 may be exposed to view through the notch or opening 17 and the numerals 30 on the disk 14 can be exposed to view through the notch or opening 18 to indicate, for example, 5.30 olclock.
The disk or plate 1+1, which lies in front of the disk or plate 13, is designed to be provided with the words Next dose at oclock, so disposed that the word at lies at one side of the notch 17 and the WOlC oclock at the opposite side, and consequently when the numeral or numerals indicating an hour are exposed through the notch or opening 17 the information to be supplied is completed and may be read, for example, thus, Next dose at 5 oclock, as shown in Fig. 1.
The rear disk 13 is the one which, in the present example, is designed to be rotated for the purpose of exposing to view any of the numerals indicating the hour at which the medicine should be administered or taken by the patient or person under treatment, and for this reason the disk 13 is constructed with the serrated or notched periphery 16. It will be obvious, however, that the disk 13 can be made stationary and the disk 14 rotated, or both disks can be made rotatable, if desired. The minute disk or plate 15 can be readily rotated by engaging a finger or finger-nail with one edge of the notch or opening 18 in this disk or plate.
The shank or support 8, carrying with it the disks or plates described and shown, is designed to fold down upon the cover or to stand approximately perpendicular in a plane substantially at right angles to the cover. The hinged or pivoted indicator devices may be folded upon the cover either while the latter is upon the medicine-glass or when removed therefrom, so that the article is placed in compact form.
\Vhen the indicator devices are turned to an approximately perpendicular position, as when they are desired for use, the shank or support 8 should be positively held in an upright position, and to accomplish this I provide the flange or rim 2 of the cover 1 with a pivoted button, catch, or latch 19, which can be turned into a position over the tailpiece 10 of the shank or support 8 after the latter has been adjusted to an upright position, so that the indicator devices are not liable to be accidentally turn ed down upon the cap or cover, which would prevent the time-indicating nu- 1n erals being immediately observed and might lead to a mistake being made in not administering or taking a dose of medicine at the proper time.
The several parts composing the improved device, except the tubular rivets or pivots, are preferably made of pyralin, or other pyroxylin compound or material in any desired color, but I do not wish to be under, stood as confining myself to constructing the parts of any particular material or substance.
The pyralin or other pyroxylin compound or material is desirable, however, in thata nice, clean, light, strong, and durable article may be thereby obtained, and one which .can be conveniently and quickly cleaned whenever desired by simply wiping it off with a damp cloth. If the device is made of pyralin in imitation of ivorya very attractive and handsome article may be provided, which will prove desirable and useful wherever medicine-glasses are employed, particularly where a person under treatment desires to be reminded of the proper time to take a dose of medicine.
The hinge connection of the shank or support with the edge of the flanged cover is an advantageous and useful part of the device, in that when not in use it can be folded into a compact form, and this is possible either while the cover is upon a glass or when the cover is removed from the glass. The foldiug of the shank or support and the disks or IIC platesmounted thereupon places these parts out'of the way when the device is not in actual use, and thus avoids the danger of the disks or plates being accidentally struck and broken from operative connection with the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A medicine-time indicator, consisting of a cover constructed to fit over and close the mouth of a medicine-glass and having a disk or plate provided with numerals indicating hours, and a disk or plate provided with a notch or opening to expose the numeral or numerals indicating any desired hour, one of the disks or plates being rotatable, so that the hour numeral or numerals may be made visible through the said notch or opening, substantially as described.
2. A medicine-time indicator, consisting of a flanged cover having a time indicator hinged or pivoted thereto and movable to stand approximately perpendicular, or folded down upon the cover, substantially as described.
3. A medicine-time indicator, consisting of a cover constructed to 'fit over and close the mouth of a medicine-glass, a shank or support hinged or pivotally connected to the cover, and two disks or plates mounted on the shank or support and provided, respectively, with numerals indicating hours, and a notch or opening to expose said numerals, one of the disks or plates being rotatable so that the hour numeral or numerals indicating the hour may be made visible through the said notch or opening, substantially as described.
4. A medicine-time indicator, consisting of a flanged cover to fit over and close the mouth of a medicine glass, a shank or support hinged or pivotally connected to the cover, and a series of disks or plates mounted on the shank or support and having means to indicate the hours and minutes, substantially as described.
5. A medicine-time indicator, consisting of a flanged cover to fit over and close the mouth of a medicine-glass, a shank or support hinged or pivotally connected to the cover, a disk or plate having a row of numerals indicating the hours, a disk or plate having a row of figures indicating minutes and provided with a notch or opening through which the hour numeral or numerals can be made visible, and a disk or plate having a notch through which the minute-numerals can be made visible, all of said disks or plates being mounted upon and swinging with the shank or support, substantially as described.
6. The combination in a medicine-time indicator for a medicine-glass, of a cover constructed to fit and close the mouth of the glass and having means for displaying the instructions as to quantity to be taken or administered, a shank or support hinged or pivotally connected to the cover and adapted to stand either upright, or to be held down upon the cover, a device for engaging the shank'or support and holding it upright, and hour-indicating devices mounted on, carried by, and swinging with said shank or support, substantially as described.
7. The combination in a medicine-time indicator for a medicine-glass, of a flanged cover to fit over and close the mouth of the glass, a
shank or support attached to the cover, a rotary disk or plate mounted on the shank or support and provided with a circular row of numerals indicating the hours, a secondary disk or plate mounted on the shank or support and having numerals indicating minutes and a notch or opening through which the hour and numeral or numerals can be made visible, and a rotary disk or plate arranged in front of said notched disk or plate and having a notch or opening through which the minute-numerals can be made visible, substantially as described.
8. The combination in a medicine-time indicatorfor a medicine-glass, of a flanged cover to fit over and close the mouth of the glass, a shank or support hinged to the cover, a rotary disk or plate having a serrated or notched periphery and provided with a circular row of numerals indicating the hours, 'asecondary disk or plate mounted on the shank or support and having numerals indicating minutes and a notch or opening through which the hour and numeral or numerals can be made visible, and a rotary disk or plate arranged in front of said notched disk or plate and having a notch or opening through which the minutenumerals can be made visible, substantially as described.
9. The combination in a medicine-time indicator for a medicine-glass, of a flanged cover constructed to fit over and close the mouth of the glass and having on its upper surface means for indicating the quantity of medicine to be taken or administered, a shank or support hinged to the cover, a rotary disk or plate having a serrated or notched periphery and provided with a circular row of numerals indicating the hours, a secondary disk or plate mounted on the shank or support and having numerals indicating minutes and a notch or opening through which the hour and numeral or numerals can be made visible, and arotary disk or plate arranged in front of said notched disk or plate and having a notch or opening through which the minute-numerals can be made visible, substantially as described.
