SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,735, dated February 9, 1897.

Application filed May 15, 1896. Serial No. 591,600. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ANDREW JACKSON LU- THER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burns, in the county of Dickson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Elevators; and I do declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The special object of the invention is to hoist tobacco up to the place where it is hung in a barn with greater facility and at less expense than is now the case, so that the work may be readily done by the farmer and a boy, while now it requires three or four men for the same thing.

In the drawings, A represents a barn-floor, to which is detachably secured a block 13, pro- Vided with the staples b b on top. To each of these staples I attach the lower end of a cord or rope C, whose upper end is fastened to the lower end of a plate D. This plate has the longitudinal slot d and the vertical row of holes d, the latter being intended to receive a detachable stop-pin d E is a horizontal board in the upper art of barn, the same being provided with the slots (2 e, through which the plates D are movable, so as to make the ropes O O taut before the hoisting begins.

F F are levers fulcrumed on and in grooves of the upright G and having two prongs at the front end, so as to straddle the plates D. The prongs rest on the board E and support the stop-pins 61 as shown in the drawings, in whatever holes d they may be placed. Between the slots 6 e the board E has an opening a, in which is pivoted the frame G on a cross-pin 6 This frame carries two vertically-alined pulleys 11, while a similar frame K below it also carries two similar pulleys in vertical alinement, but the latter also carries the tobacco-holder L as it is moved up and down. The holder L has pairs of arms Z, from one to four pairs, whose ends are turned up to prevent the sticks on which the split tobacco-plants are hung from slipping 01f. It also has holes ll, through which pass the guideropes C O.

Z are rods by which the holder L is attached to the frame K.

M is a pulley rope or cord secured at one end to a cross-bar m or other convenient fixture in the upper part of barn, and thence carried over the top pulley of frame G, then down under the bottom pulley of frame K, then up over the lower pulley of frame G, then down under the upper pulley of the 'frame K, and finally up to the lower end of frame G, where it is made fast. A boy of twelve to fourteen years of age after loading up the holder with the sticks of tobacco by simply pulling on the rope M can hoist them up to a man in the upper part of the barn, so that he can conveniently arrange them in place.

Having thus described all that is necessary to afull understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
