Mp. M/M- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FOUNTAIN O. REEVES, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
WHIP-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,695, dated February 9, 1897.
Application filed March 30, 1896- Serial No.- 585,480. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FOUNTAIN O. REEVES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas, State of Texas, have inventedanew and useful Improvement in Whip-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and novel mechanism, in combination with a whip-holder, by which the butt-end of a whip can be locked in the holder, and at the same time lap-robes or other such articles usually carried in vehicles can be so secured that theycannot be removed by thieves.
My invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 isaside elevation of the device complete, having one of the adjusting-bands removed therefrom so as to show slot 11 through the wall of the body part of the holder. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through Fig. 1.' Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the adjusting-bands at, having the notch 5, in which operates the locking-rod 6.
Similar numerals and letters of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 1 represents the walls of the holder, the side walls being so depressed as to form two grooves 2 and 3, in which are the adjusting-bands at, having each the notch 5.
Closely fitting to the inner surface of the body part of the holder is the locking-bar 6, having notches 7 and 8, the wedge-shaped head 9, and the foot 10, which passes through the base of the holder a At points indicated by the numeral 11 there are two slots through the depressed side walls of the holder to admit of the passing through of the locking-bar.
The device is held in an erect position by supports 12 and 13, the support 13 having a hole 14 through an extension 15, which will receive the foot 10 of the locking-bar when lowered.
As to the operation of my device, the drawings represent the holder as being unlocked, the locking-bar being pulled upwardly to its highest point, in which position the adjusting-bands are made immovable by the locking-bar passing upwardly into the notches 5. The butt-end of the whip is now placed into the holder. Then to lock it in the holder, first push the locking-bar down until notches 7 and 8 come opposite the slots 11, the adjustingbands now being free to work around the holder, and each adjusting-baud being now set to some particular figure (indicated at a) on the outer surface of the adj usting-ba-nds, which will be indicated by the pointer a, of which there is one foreach band 4. Now turn the band around from this particular position indicated by the pointer, and the locking-bar will be locked by engagement of the bands at in the notches 7 8.
It will be observed that the wedge-shaped head 9 of the locking-bar extends so farinto the center of the holder that the butt-end of the whip cannot pass out of the holder when the device is locked.
I11 addition to locking the whip in the holder,
as previously described,l have provided novel and suitable mechanism combined with the whip-locking device for the looking or securing of lap-robes or other such articles, this part of the device being locked or unlocked simultaneously with the whip-locking device, and to accomplish this object I have provided an extension 15 from the lower support 13,
in which is the hole 14, which is immediately under the foot 10 of the locking-bar, which when being lowered catches the lap-robe 16 in between it and the hole14.
To unlock the device, it is only necessary to turn the adjusting-bands until the-point ers Ct are opposite the same figures previously indicated by them when the device was locked. Then pull the locking-bar up to the highest point.
Having th us explained all that is necessary for a full understanding of my device by those skilled in the art to which it appertains, what I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a whip-holder, the combination, with a socket, of a notched locking-bar vertically movable therein, and a rotary band on said socket arranged to rotate in said notch when the locking-bar is suitably depressed, and having a notch in which said bar can reciprocate when said band is suitably rotated, substantially as described.
2. In a whip-holder, the eombinationm'ith head 9, the notches 7 and 8 and the foot 10, the socket 1, of the locking-bar 6, having the combined with the adjusting-bands 4,having notch 7 the rotary band 4 having the notch the notches 5 and the figures a, on the outer I 5 and suitable distinguishing-marks a, and surface thereof which are pointed out by a 5 the pointer 61, substantially as described. pointer a, combined with an extension from In a whip-holder, the CODlbiIlitiliODflVith the lower support 15 having 1311611016141311616- the socket 1, of the 1ocking bar 6 having the in, all for a purpose as heretofore substannotches 7 8, the bands 4 with the notches 5 tiaiiy set forth. and marks a, and the pointers (t, substan- 1 FOUNTAIN O.
