JOHN H. JENNER, OF LEAVENWORTH, INDIANA.
W R E N C H A SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,454, dated February 2, 1897.
Application filed November 6, 1896. Serial No. 611,256. (No model.)
To all whom, it may cancel-m.
Be it known that I, JOHN H. JENNER, of Leavenworth, in the county of Crawford and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved wrench of the alligator type, and which is simple and durable in construction and readily adjustable for engaging and properly gripping pipes, rods, &c., of diiferent diameters.
The invention consists principally of a re movable jaw and a slidable jaw having its gripping-face at angles to the stock member on which the jaw is fitted to slide.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same; as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
pin D, driven transversely in the member A and through an opening in the lug B Now by removing the pin D the jaw B can be swung inward, with the offset B as the fulcrum, until the lug B is out of engagement with the memberA and then by moving the jaw B transversely the latter can be readily disengaged from the stock A. Thus whenever the jaw 13 is worn out it can be readily removed and replaced by a new one.
The jaw G is preferably made in. the shape of a casing fitted to slide on the member A and is prevented from dropping off the said member by a pin E, attached to the said member and projecting from the sides thereof to engage the sides of the jaw O. Byremoving the pin E the jaw C is slipped off the member A and replaced by a new one whenever necessary.
Now it will be seen that by the arrangement described the movable jaw O can be readily slipped or shifted along the member in which similar characters of reference indi- A according to the size of the article to be cate corresponding parts in all the figures. gripped, to make the wrench useful for grip- 2 5 Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improveping pipes, rods, and the like of different diment. is a sectional side elevation of the same on By having the toothed 0r serrated. face C the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged of the movable jaw O at an angle to the top end elevation of the slidable jaw. of the member A the jaw is not liableto slip 30 The improved wrench is provided with a on the said member when the wrench is used stock A, having a handle A, and forked memfor turning the article gripped between the bers A and A extending at angles to each jaws. The jaws may be made of steel or other, as is plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and other suitable material, and as they are re- 3. On the member A is held a removable movable and separate from the stock of the 5 jaw B, and on the member A is arranged a wrench they can be properly tempered and slidable jaw O, the gripping-face O of which hardened. stands at an angle to the top of the member The jaws may be made of rubber or other A Thus when the article is gripped by the elastic material for gripping polished surfaces 0 jaws B and O and the stock is moved to turn without marring the same.
0 the article then the pressure on the inclined Having thus fully described my invention, face 0 of the jaw O securely holds the latter I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters in position on the member A Patent The removable jawB is formed at its inner 1. A wrench, comprising a stock formed 5 face with teeth or serrations B", and the inwith forked members, a jaw removably held 5 ner end of the said jaw is formed with a ciron one of the said members, and a second jaw cular offset B fitting into a correspondinglyin the form of a casing loosely mounted to shaped recess A formed in the stock A at slide upon the other member and having its the apex of the members A and A The gripping-face inclined toward the inner end 10o outer end of the jawB is formed with an upthereof, substantially as shown and de- 50 wardly-extending lug B engaging a recess scribed.
A formed in the free end of the member A the said lug B being fastened in place by a 2. A wrench, comprising the stock formed with forked members, a jaw formed at its inner end With an offset arranged to fit in a correspondingly-shaped recess in the stock at the apices of the forked members and at its outer end With a lug received in a recess in one of said members, 2L pin inserted through apertures in the aforesaid member and in said lug, and a second jaw in the form of a casing; mounted to slide on the other member of the stock which is provided at its forward end Witnesses:
