Description

UNITED STATE \VALDO EMERSON AYER, OF DELAVARE, OIIIO.
BOTTLE OR STAND FOR MUCILAGE OR INK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,085, dated February 2, 1897'.
Application filed November 6,1896. Serial No. 611,283. (No model.)
To all whom; it may concern-.-
Be it known that LWALDo EMERSON AYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delaware, in the county of Delaware and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles or Stands for Mucilage or Ink, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottles or stands for mucilage and ink; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class the construction and operation of which are such as to prevent the clogging of the neck when used as a mucilage-bottle or the insertion of a pen too far into the ink when used as an ink-bottle.
. The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved bottle or stand, and Fig. 2a plan view thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my device are indicated by the same numerals of reference throughout both views, and in practice I provide a bottle or stand 5, which may be of any desired form, but which is preferably of the form shown in the drawings, and which may also be composed of any desired material.
The bottle or stand 5 is provided with a top 6, at one side of which is a circular opening,
around which is formed a neck or rim 7 and which is adapted to be closed by a plug or stopper 8, the lower end of which is provided with an annular band 9, on which is formed or to which is secured a downwardly-directed arm 10, to which is pivoted a lever 11, in which is formed a longitudinal slot 12, and I also provide a rod 13, which passes through the plug or stopper Sand which is provided at its upper end with a knob or handle 14, and its lower end is connected with the lever 11 by means of a pin or similar device 15, which passes through the slot 12, formed therein.
Secured to the free end of the lever 11 is a hollow conical or cup-shaped receptacle 16, and the top 6 of the bottle or stand is provided opposite the neck or rim 7 with an openin g 17, which is preferably provided with an upwardly-directed flange or rim 1S, and which may also be closed by a plug or stopper, if desired.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof. The rod 13 may be held at any desired position in the plug or stopper 8 by friction, or it may move loosely therein, and when the device is used as a mucilage-bottle and it is desired to apply the mucilage the rod 13 is raised by the knob or head, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and this raises the cup-shaped receptacle 16 into the opening 17. In this operation the cup-shaped receptacle 16 will be filled with mucilage and the brush is inserted thereinto, and the mucilage is applied in the usual manner.
Bymeans of this device the clogging or closing of the opening 17 by reason of the mucilage collecting or drying thereon is avoided, and if said opening should become partially closed at any time the dried or caked mu cilage may be easily removed therefrom by a knife or other device without injury to the bottle or stand.
If the bottle or stand is used as an inkstand, the operation will be the same; and when the cup-shaped receptacle 16 is raised into the po sition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 the pen is inserted thereinto, and this device prevents the pen from being inserted too far into the ink, it being understood that the cup-shaped receptacle 16 will be filled with ink when it is raised into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
It will be also understood that the cupshaped receptacle 16 may be made of any desired depth, and it will thus be seen that I ac complish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to ac complish the result for which it is intended.
It will also be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein de scribed may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt- An ink or lnueilage bottle, having a top thereon provided in one side with a circular opening therein, a rim formed thereabout, a
- plug or stopper adapted to be placed therein,
an annular band on the lower end of said plug; a downwardly-directed arm secured to said band, a lever pivoted to said arm and provided with a longitudinal slot therein, a rod passing through said plug and engaging said lever, a knob on the upper end of said rod, and a hollow conical receptacle secured to the free end of said lever adapted to fit into
