BICYCLE LUNCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,65 5, dated January 19, 1897. Application filed July 9, 1896. Serial No. 598,601. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD N. LOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful lmprovem ents in Bicycle Lunch- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a lunch-box which can be conveniently attached to and carried on a bicycle, and which will be of compact structure and securely retain its contents; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lunch-box. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional end elevation of a lunch-box. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan View of the box-cover.

metal, comprises the sides 1, ends 2, and bottom 3. The box is open at top and can be closed by a rigid cover 4, having flanges 5.
At the inside of the box, a suitable distance below its top or mouth, is a lug 6, Fig. 2, and a catch or spring 7. The lug 6 and catch 7 can hold down a plate or shallow dish 8 onto a pan 9, resting on bottom 3 and adapted for the reception of food. Eatables can also be placed on the plate 8 in the box. When the catch 7 is withdrawn, the plate 8 can be withdrawn by the ring or handle 10.
The cover 4 has a holder comprising a strip 11, soldered or secured to the under side of the cover and having recesses 12 for inserting or slipping thereinto the ends or parts of the handles of utensils, such as a knife, fork, or spoon. The holder or plate 13 is hinged at 14 to cover 4, and when the utensils 17' are placed against cover 4, into engagement with holder 11, the holder 13 can be closed against the cover 4 to hold an end of each of the utensils between a raised holder portion 15 and cover 4, the holder 13 being locked by suitable pins or catches 16.
Surrounding the box 1 2 3 is a casing 18 of soft material, as leather, said casing having its bottom 19 extended below the box 1 2 3, so as to form a lower compartment 20. A soft or padding strip 21, as leather, is extended across the box-bottom 3 within the lower compartment 20 to form a soft top for the latter. The casing 18 has flaps 23, 24, and
25. The flap 23 closes the lower compartment 20. The flap portion 24 sits along a box side 1, and the flap portion 25 sits over the cover 4. By loosening the straps or fastenings 26 the flap 23 can be thrown down to open compartment 20, or the flaps 24 and 25 can be thrown back to enable cover 4 to be removed. The casing has attaching straps or loops 27 and 28 at its top and front for engaging a bicycle-frame.

Arigid open-top box or receptacle having therein a lug and catch located below its top for the retention of a dish in the lower part of the box, and provided with a rigid flanged cover having holding-strips, said box being surrounded by a leather or soft casing extended below the bottom of the box so as to form a lower compartment, a soft or padding strip being extended across the box-bottom within the lower compartment to form a soft top for the latter, said casing having flaps for covering the cover and a side of the box and for closing the lower compartment, said casin g having attaching straps or loops at its top and front substantially as described.
