LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,056, dated January 12, 1897. Application filed March 20, 1896. Serial No. 584,027. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT MUNN DIXON, a
resident of East Orange, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lamps, more particularly to that class of lamps known as carlamps and it consists in the herein-described construction and arrangement of parts.
My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a brokenaway plan view of the shade of the lamp, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. In the drawings, A is themain casting of the lamp, from which an expansion-chamber B depends, which terminates in a burner O, surrounded by a casing D, which is contained within a globe E. Depending from the casting A is a chimney-gallery F, from which depends a two-part ring G H. The chimneygallery F likewise supports the casing D of the burner. Carried by the lower member H of the two-part ring are brackets I, only one of which is shown in full lines, through which supporting-screws J pass. These supporting- 3o screws engage and support a shade-support.
(Shown clearly in Figs. Z and 3.) This shadesupport comprises an annular member L, comprising a strip from which ears a project outwardly. One or more of these cars is tapped, 3 5 as at b, for the passage of the supportingscrew J, and projecting outside the circumference of the annulus L will catch upon the screw, should the said screw work out of the hole in the said ear, and prevent the shade- 40 support, with the shade, from falling. Arms 0 depend from the annulus L and are secured a to an annulus M, which presents a concavelycurved cross-section. N is the shade, which is apertured at e for the passage of the ears a and the screws, and rests with its edge in the concavely-curved annulus M. Surrounding the chimney-gallery F is a casing O, which is supported from a casing P, which in turn supports the hood R. Cooperating with the hood R is a hood Q and a chimney S, which are supported from the main casting A.
It will be observed that by my invention I arn enabled to provide a lamp wherein the shade maybe readily detached from the lamp, and when it is desired to ignite the lamp the lower member of the ring may be disconnected from the upper member, together with the globe and shade carried by said lower memher, and swung to one side out of the way of the burner. 63
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a lamp, the combination with a suitable support, of a shade-holder comprising annular members L M, arms 0 connecting the 65 annuli, a shade N apertured at e and resting in the annulus M, and means projected through theapertures in the shade for connecting and disconnecting the shade-holder together with the shade supported thereon from the support.
2. In a lamp, the combination of a two-part globe-supporting ring, a bracket I projecting from the lower member of said two-part ring,
a shade-holder comprising an annulus L, an annulus M and arms 0 connecting the annuli, said shade-holder having means cooperating therewith and with the brackets I to support the shade upon the lower member, whether the lower member be connected or discon- 8o nected from the other member of the two-part ring.
3. As a new and useful article of manufacture, the herein-described shade-holder comprising an annulus L, an annulus M of larger diameter than the annulus L, bowed arms 0 connecting the annuli, and perforated ears carried upon the annulus L, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination with a shade of aholder 0 comprising an annulus M, an annulus L, arms connecting the annuli, and perforated ears carried by the annulus L and projecting beyond the circumference of the said annulus L.
5.
