Be it known that I, ELIAS B. REQUA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in lamps; and its object is to provide a lighting device in which the drafts of air are effectually diffused and properly directed and their influence regulated to produce a regular brilliant pure flame capable of affording the maximum amount of light.
The invention will be readily understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in, whicl1- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a lamp embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View, looking at a different side from that shown in Fig. 1, of the oil-font. Fig. 3 is a top view of same. Fig. 4 is a detached plan view of the wick raising and lowering devices. Figs. 5 and 6 are top views of the deflector G and cone H, and Fig. 7 is a top view of the band X.
A denotes the oil-font, which is of suitable outline and of proper size to slip within the sustainingannulus B, spring-fingers 0 being provided on the exterior surfaces of the oilfont to engage the lower edge of the ring, whereby, when the font is inserted in place, the fingers will hold it in a set position. Af-- ter the font has been introduced in place and sustained by the spring-fingers C, it may be further secured by aset-screw, D, which passes through the ring B and finds a seat for its inner end in the cavity a, formed in the side of the font. The ring B is supported between the lower ends of the bar forming the suspension-frame E.
Upon the upper central part of the oil-font A is arranged the wick-tube F, which is surrounded by the deflectorGand theforaminous cone H, the latter of which rests upon the horizontal arms I, extending radially outward from the wick-tube, while the, former is sustained by thevertical flange J ,which connects the outer ends of the arms I.
Upon the deflector G is secured the annular chimney-supporting rim L, which is appropriately adapted to receive the lower end of the globe or chimney N, and contains a line of perforations, O, at a point between the edge of the chimney and the deflector G. The upthe deflector G. The air which is fed to the flame from the lower part of the device enters through the foraminous band K, and thence passes through the line of apertures O, the
spaces between the arms I, and foraminous cone H. The air which reaches the flame is thus thoroughly diffused and effectually protected from the influence of outside drafts or currents of air. In cases where the lamp is exposed to extreme drafts-such as in an open hallway or the saloon of a ferry-boatit may be found desirable to secure over the foraminous band K an additional band of perforated material, X, and 'when this is to be employed Iwill usually constructit in two parts, hinged and adapted to be applied around the lamp, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 7.
Up on the upper edge of the foraminous band K is provided the flange Q, in which rests the lower edge of the inverted-coneshaped globe R, the upper edge of the globe terminating within the lower edge of the vertical perforated ring S, which depends from the reflector T, which is adjustably secured between the sides of the flame E by means of .the screws U and the slotted plates V, which are attached directly to the edge of the reflector. Byloosening the-screws U the reflector may be moved vertically and secured in any set position by tightening the screws. The reflector T supports atits center the dome P, which is perforated, as indicated'at X and Y, and is held in position byset-screws :0. In the part X of the dome P are secured the cone-shaped deflectors Z and Z, as indicated in Fig. 1. The
deflector Z extends slightly above the aperl dome I. The passage of the air through the tures in the part X of the dome, and is itself provided with apertures I) below the line of the upper edge of the deflector Z.
The wick may be raised and loweredin the wick-tube by means of the horizontal shaft (1, having the usual toothed wheels upon its inner end in contact with the wick, and upon its outer end the gear-wheel c, in combination with the vertical shaft f, having upon its upper end a gear-wheel, 7, which meshes with the gear-wheel c, secured upon the horizontal shaft 11, the lower end of the vertical shaft being provided with a suitable fingerwheel, 1'.
Upon the lower edge of the ring connecting the outer ends of the horizontal arms I is secured a small staple, n, which encircles the shaft, (1, and prevents its bending or disarrangement from proper relation to the vertical shaftf.
It will be observed that the vertical shaft f and the gear-wheels c and y are without the oilf0nt; and in order to permit of the introduction of the font carrying this mechanism into the ring 13 without interfering with its operation, and without disturbing its parts, I have arranged on the inner side of the ring the vertical concave plate 121, as indicated in Fig. 2. The vertical plate m,while preserving the geanwheels e g from contact with the edges of the ring 13, operates also as a guide for directing the font A into the ring in such relation that the cavity a in the side thereof will come in proper position to receive the inner end of the setscrew D. The arrangen'ient of the shafts d f, with their gear-wheels, as described, admits of the wick being managed without removing thefont from the annulus B.
For the purpose of providing for the expansion and contraction of the parts of the lamp adjacent to the wicktube, I have provided a packing of rubber or other suitable material within the flange Q, and allow the globe R to rest therein. This packing also prevents the jarring of the globe when the oilfont has been removed from the band B and replaced therein. A portion of the air which enters through the perforations in the ring S passes downward and is fed through the perforations O and between the arms I, while the remaining portion encompasses the upper part of the chimney N and passes upward through the deflector Z and apertures in the dome P and deflectors Z Z facilitates the movement of the current upward through the lamp, and the air passing around the sides of the inner deflector, Z, has the effect of drawing the air from within over the edges of the said deflector and carryingit off through the apertures.
The arrangement of the draft-passages described prevents the formation within the globes of disturbing currents, and assists materially in the production of a regular white effective flame.
I reserve the right to use such parts of the device hereinbefore described as may be applicable for the purpose tofthc burning of gas.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is
1. In a lamp, the oil-font provided with the shafts and gear-wheels for raising and lowering the wick, in combination with the band B, having a concave vertical plate, m, substantially as set forth.
2. In a lamp, the oil-font, the wick-tube, arms I, foraminous cone H, deflector G, and rim L, provided with apertures within the line of the chimney, in combination with the band B, the foraminous band K, and inverted coneshaped globe It, substantially as set forth.
The reflector T, the perforated ring S, and dome I in combination with the invertedcone-shaped globe R and the burner and chimney, substantially as set forth.
4. In a lamp, the oil-font, burner, chimney, globe, reflector, and dome,in combination with the ring B, foraminous band K, and detachable foraininous band X, substantially as set forth. Y
5. In a lighting device,the reflector T,globe, and burner, in combination with the bracketframe E, screws U, and slotted plates V, the latter being secured to opposite sides of the reflector, and the frame being provided with apertures to receive the screws, substantially as specified.
