Description
PATENTED MAY 15, 1906.
A. s. FRANGIS, INGANDESOENT GAS BURNER ANDLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED P313. 6, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
INCANDESCENT GAS BURNER AND LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed February 6 1905. Serial No. 244,484.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADoLPnUs SYDNEY FRANCIS, engineer, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 155 Farringdon road, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Incandescent Gas Burners and Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in and connected with gas burners and lamps, particularly for outside use or where the said burners or lamps are subjected to more or less vibration.
According to this invention the burner is suspended by springs in a frame attached to the top of the gas-supply pipe or other suit able part, such springs being suitably helical or spiral, and the connection or connections from the as-supply pipe to the burner is or are suitably made by means of metal or other flexible tubing so that the vibration of the gas-supply pipe or of the lamp is not communicated to the burner and the life of the incandescent mantle is thereby prolonged.
In order to enable the invention to be readily understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which the inventtion is shown applied to a lamp of a particular construction; but it is to be understood that any type of incandescent lamp or burner might be supported by the improved means.
Figure 1 is an elevation of an incandescent gas-lamp with these im rovements applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a p an of the improved support shown in Fig. 1.
As an example, it may be stated that the frame is suitably made in the form of a disk 0!, with a central hole I) and has two, three, or more radiating arms a, which are bent upward. These arms 0 have eyes or hooks d at their upper ends, and the springs e are hooked into the said eyes or hooks d and are fastened below to a similar but smaller frame f, which is secured to the burner g in any suitable manner. The larger frame a is fastened on the gas-supply pipe h or other convenient place, and consequently by the present invention the burner g is suspended in such manner as to prevent as far as is possible any vibration being communicated to it.
A flexible metal or other tube 1' is connected at its lower end to the lower end of the supply-pipe h by soldering or brazing and at its upper end is supplied with some suitable nipp e or connection 76, which protrudes through the central hole 8 of the frame f for the burner g to be screwed or attached thereto. The nipple k may havea flange Z, coming underneath the framef and the burner g, screwing or bearing down by reason of its connection with the nipple upon the upper surface of the frame f. The latter is thus clamped between the burner and the flange Z, and consequently the lamp is securely suported upon the frame. I If a by-pass or pilot ight is used, a second flexible metal or other tube m is provided, which is suitably connected with a small valve-casing n, and at its upper end has, say, a plain nipple 15, (shown in dotted lines,) which may be loosely inserted into the expanded part 0 of the by-pass tube ,1 fixedly mounted on the burner g. The supply of gas to the burner is controlled by the usual tap 1".
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
1. The combination with an incandescent gas-lamp, of a supporting-frame fixed to the bottom thereof, a fixed supporting-frame having bowed arms sufficiently concaved to allow lateral play of the first-named frame, springs connecting said arms with the firstnamed frame and having their points of connection situated considerably below the top of the burner of said lamp and so arranged that the springs are inclined to counteract lateral play of the first-named frame, and a flexible tube for supplying the burner of said 2. The combination with an incandescent gas-lamp, of a supporting-frame fixed to the bottom thereof, a fixed tubular support, a
frame secured to said support having bowed supportin -arms sufficiently concaved to allow lateral playof the first-named frame, springs connecting said arms with the firstnamed frame and having their points of connection situated considerably below the top of the burner of said lamp and so arranged that the springs are inclined to counteract lateral play of the first-named frame, and a flexible gas-supply tube partly contained in said tubular support and connected at one end to the lower end of saidsupport and at the other end to the lamp.
3. The combination with an incandescent gas-lamp, of a fixed frame mounted on a rigid gas-supply pipe and provided with arms extending upward and inward, a burner-supporting frame provided with radial arms, helical springs connecting the radial arms of the burner-supporting frame with the fixed frame, a burner, a flexible tube for supplying the said burner, a by-pass, a second flexible tube for supplying the bypass or pilot burner, a nipple on the end of the second flexible tube adapted to be loosely inserted into the bypass tube, substantially as described and shown.
4. The combination with an incandescent gas-lamp, of a supporting-frame fixed thereto, a fixed tubular support, a frame secured to said support and comprising bowed supporting-arms, springs connecting said arms with the first-named frame and having their points of connection so arranged that said springs are inclined, a flexible gas-supply tube partly contained in said tubular support and connected at one end to the lower end of said support and at the other end to the lamp, a by-pass, a second flexible tube for supplying the by-pass or pilot burner, a nipple on the end of the second flexible tube adapted to be loosely inserted into the bypass tube, substantially as set forth' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLPHUS SYDNEY FRANCIS.
