FIRE-LIGHTING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
Application led February 18, 1916. Serial No. 79,115.
tain new and useful Improvements in Fire-v Lighting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to iii-e lighting devices, and has for its principal object to pro` vide a portable gas-burning device adapted to easily and quickly start coal res in furnaces, stoves, and the like.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices, elements and parts, as shown in the accompanying drawings and fully described in this specification.
In the said drawings, Figure 1 is afront view of the ash pit of a furnace, showing my invention in place; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view on an enlarged scale of one of the burners detached from the device as a whole; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of one of said burners, showing the burner in position, the top plate of the device being removed.
In carrying my invention into effect in the embodiment thereof which I have selected for illustration in the accompanying drawings and description in this Specification, I provide a casing comprising a top plate 11, a bottom plate 12, a horizontal partition 13, sides 14, and ends 15. This casing may be mounted upon supports 16, and is adapted to be placed in the ash pit of a furnace or stove when it is desired to start a fire in the same, and to be afterward removed. The space between the bottom plate 12 and the partition 13 is adapted to form a gas-chest, and an intake pipe 17 connects it by means of a flexible tube or the like with a source of gas supply. The capacity of this gas-chest may if desired be restricted by means of partitions 18. The space between the top plate 11 and the partition 13 constitutes a wind-chest, which is connected by means of a tube 19 with a rubber bulb 20, or a similar air forcing device. I provide one or more burners, which may be arranged in any suitable or desirable manner on the casing. Each burner com-- prises a globe 21, provided with a central approximately vertical gas-tube 22, having secured to its upper opening a tube 30 of smaller diameter than the said tube 22, and having its lower end communicating with the gas-chest. I also provide curved airtubes 23 opening adjacent the outlet of the gas tube and communicating with the windchest. The top of the burner is provided with a nipple 24 surrounding theV tube 3() and the openings of the tubes 23; and eX- tending from diametrically opposite portions of its sides I provide supporting projections 25. For every burner I provide a circular perforation in the partition 13, in which it is adapted to fit snugly, being supported by the projections 25, which rest in an annular depression 26 (see Fig. 4) in the partition 13, surrounding the perforation therein. Directly above each of these per-y forations I provide a .smaller perforation in the top plateA 11, in which the upper part of the burner is adapted to fit snugly.
The operation of my invention is as fol- Y lows: vWhen it is desired to light a fire, the
casing is placed in the ash pit, shown in Fig. 1 and designated 27, underneath the grate, designated 29. The tube 17 is connected with a source of gas supply, the burners lighted, and the bulb 20 operated. The gas enters the chest formed by the plate 12 and partition 13, and passes up through the gas-tube 22 and out through the tube 30. The air supply enters the chest formed between the plate 11 and partition 13, passes through the tubes 23 and out the peripheral portions of the nipple 24, surrounding the gas jet and preventing it from spreading out, thereby producing a torch-like or blow-pipe flame.
In order that the flame of the gas jet may be directed against the coal above the grate, and not against the grate bars, itis desirable to provide means whereby the direction in which the tip of the burner points may be, to a certain extent, adjusted as desired. In my invention this is accomplished by rocking the burner as a whole on the supports 25, and as the burner may be turned on its aXis and these supports 25 rested upon any part of the depression 26 and pointed in any direction, it is obvious that the nipple 24 may be made to assume any position, being limited only by striking against the plate 11.
The advantages of my invention will be obvious from what has been above said concerning its construction and mode of operation. I do not limit myself to the exact form described, as it is obvious that various changes might be made, as for instance, that the air supply, which is not absolutely essential, might be omitted, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
l. A fire lighting device comprising a gas chest connected with a suitable source of gas supply and provided with a perforation, and a gas burner comprising a globe having a perforation therethrough and rotatably seated in said perforation.
2. A fire lighting device comprising a gas chest connected with a suitable source of gas supply and provided with a perforation, and a gas burner comprising a globe having a perforation therethrough and adapted to pass partly into said perforation, said gas burner being provided with lateral projections whereby it is adapted to rest on the upper surface of said gas chest.
3. A fire lighting device comprising a casing provided with a perforation, a horizontal partition in said casing provided with a perforation located beneath said first named perforation, a gas burner comprising a globe adapted to pass partly into said perfora- `tions said O`lobe havinO a erforation connecting the space beneath said horizontal partition with the: outer air; and means adapted to connect the space beneath said horizontal partition with a source of gas supply.
4. A re lighting device comprising a casing provided with a perforation, la horizontal partition in said casing provided with a perforation located. beneath said first named perforation, a gas burner comprising a globe adapted to pass partly into said perforations, said globe having a perforation adapted to connect the space beneath said horizontal partition with the outer air and another perforation adapted to connect the space above said horizontal partition with the outer air. 4
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 1st day of February 1916.
