I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM G. LEWIS, OF HOPE, ARKANSAS.
CHALK-LINE HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 574,617, dated January 5, 1897. Application filed December 31, 1895. fierial No. 573,937. (No model.)
To cold whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hope, in the county of Hem pstead and State of Arkansas, have invented a'newand useful Chalk- Line Holder, of which the following is a speciout in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chalk-line holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of one of the sections of the device.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 and 2 designate two separable telescoping tubular sections, preferably circular and provided at their outer ends with circular heads 3, projecting laterally from the sides of the sections to form annular flanges and constituting the ends of the reel. The upper tubular section 1 is provided at its inner end with an inwardly-projecting annular flange 4 and constitutes a receptacle for prepared chalk or other suitable substance, and the othertubu lar section 2 is provided with longitudinal slots 5, located diametrically opposite each other'and forming a passage for the chalkline 6. These slots have enlarged inner terminals 7 to enable the chalk-line to be readily passed through the section, and the outer terminals 8 are circular and receive the chalkline snugly. When the two sections are assembled, the inner portions of the slots are closed by the section 1, and the contents of the latter are brought into contact with the cord as the latter is drawn through the device.
In order to prevent any waste of the material as the eord is drawn through the openings of the tubular section 2, a block 9, of soft material, such as cork or the like, is arranged within the outer end of the section 2 at the outer terminals of the slots or openings, and it is provided at its inner face with a transverse groove 10, disposed opposite the outer terminals 8 of the slots or openings 5 and forming a passage for the cord, and the block is provided with afiexible covering 11, preferably extending over the outer side face of the block and a portion of the inner face thereof. This flexible covering may be constructed of any suitable material, and it operates as a brush to free the cord of superfluous chalk or other material employed in marking.
\Vhen the material is introduced into the section 1, the device is inverted. to bring the inner end of the section 1 uppermost, and by this construction the device may be readily supplied with material.
It will be seen that the device is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to form a reel for a chalkline, and that it is capable of enabling a line to be rapidly and thoroughly chalked without inconvenience or loss of material.
Changes in the form, proportion, or minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit'or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, such as adapting the device to the various kinds of chalk-lines employed.
Vhat I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising two separable telescoping tubular sections provided at their outer ends with heads to form a reel, one of the sections being provided at opposite sides with longitudinal slots having enlarged inner ends, and the other section constituting a receptacle and extending into the said section and covering the major portions of the slots or openings and confining a chalk-line to the outer terminals of the slots, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising two separable tubular sections provided at their outer ends with heads to form a reel, I brush whereby pulverized chalk or similar one of the sections being provided with lonmaterial may be used, substantially as degitudinal slots or openings, and the other secscribed. tion having at its inner end an inwardly-ex- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 5 tending annular flange, ablock arranged Withmy own I have hereto affixed my signature in I 5 in one of the sections at the outer end thereof the presence of two Witnesses.
and provided with a groove located opposite \VILLIAM Gr. LEWIS. the slots or openings, and a piece of flexible \Vitnesses: material arranged on the block and disposed S. R. OGLESBY,
1c opposite the annular flange and forming a XV. P. AGEE.
