Description

NITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HARRY EMERY AND VALTER MORGAN, OF HIGH BRIDGE, NEWT JERSEY.
MILK-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,865, dated December 29, 1896.
Application filed June 11, 1896. Serial No. 595,107. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY EMERY and WALTER MORGAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of High Bridge, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Gans and Similar Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
rlhis invention relates to milk-cans and similar vessels, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class for securing the lids or covers thereto.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a milk-can provided with our improvement, the neck and the lid or cover of the can being shown in section; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
A Fig. 3, a side view of the upper part of the can and the neck; Fig. 4f, a similar view of the lid or cover, and Fig. 5 a sectional side view of a key which we employ.
In the practice of our invention we provide a milk-can or other vessel 7 which is provided with a neck S, at the upper end of which is preferably formed an annular bead 9, and we also provide a lid or cover 10, having an annular depending rim 11, at one side of which and in the bottom thereof is a vertical slot 12,`
and formed in one side of the neck Sis a perforation or opening 13, over which is formed or secured a shoulder or projection 14, in the outer end of which is formed an annular chamber 15. XVe also provide a binding-screw 16, having a head 17 at the inner end thereof, and said screwis adapted to be passed outwardly through the slot 12, the perforation or opening 13, and through the shoulder or projection 14, and the outer end thereof is angular in cross-section, as shown at 18.
The lid-or cover 10 is provided with a downwardly-curved annular flange or rim 1-9, and wc also provide akey 20, having a cross-head 21, and the shaft of which is provided at one end with a head 22, in which is formed a cham- 5o ber 23, which is angular in cross-section and by means of which the screw 16 is operated.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
It will be understood that the screw 16 is always in position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and whenever it is desired to secure the lid or cover to the can said lid or cover is placed 6o in position as shown in Fig. 1, the depending rim 11 being inserted thereinto in such nian` ner that the screw 16 passes into the slot 12. The key is then applied to the outer end of said screw and the same is tightened, so as to securely hold the lid or cover in place, and whenever it is desired to remove the lid or cover the key is again applied and the screw loosened, as will be readily understood.
This device is simple in construction and 7o operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and itis evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be niade without departing from the spirit of our 7 5 invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A milk-can or other vessel provided with 8o a neck through one side of which is passed a screw, said neck being also provided with a shoulder or projection through which the screw passes, and a lid or cap having a depending annular rim, which is adapted to be inserted into said neck, and a vertical slot in one side of said rim, through which the screw passes, when the lid or cover is placed in position, substantially as shown and described.
2. A milkcan or other Vessel provided with 9o a neck, through one side of which is passed a screw, said neck beingalso provided with a shoulder or projection through which the screw passes, and a lid or cap having a depending annular rim, which is adapted to be inserted into said neck, and a vertical slot in one side of said rim, through which the screw passes, when thelid or cover is placed in position, said shoulder or projection being propresence of the subscribing witnesses, this vided with a chamber in the outer end thereof, 271,11 d ay of May, 1890.
HARRY EMERY.
and the outer end of said screw being adapted to receive n key by which it is operated, snh- TA-LTER MORGAN. 5 stantiaily as shown and described. Witnesses:
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as ANDREW F. MURRAY,
our invention We have signed oni1 naines, in JOHN CORLING.
