To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MEYER PANOFF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 84 Belmont avenue, in the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hats or Caps, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide a head-covering with means for securing thorough ventilation and for excluding the air at will.

The accompanying drawings show a cap embodying my invention.

Figure 1 is a View with the ventilatingspace closed. Fig. 2 shows the same opened. Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view taken on the lines so a: of Fig. 2, showing the manner of uniting the several parts.

The cap A consists of the crown l3, ventilating-screen C, the covering-band D, and the peak E, and is provided with the usual or any suitable linings.

The essential feature of this invention is the employment of a ventilating-screen C instead of the usual cloth band and in providing means D for covering the screen 0 when it is desired to exclude the air and for uncovering said screen when ventilation is desired.

In constructing a cap according to my invention I take a piece of wire screening of a width equal to the desired height of the cap and of sufficient length to form the desired size of cap, and bending the same around I overlap the ends and secure the same together by sewing or otherwise. The crown B is secured to the upper edge of the screen 0 by sewing or otherwise. To the lower edge of the screen 0 is attached a covering-band D. This band I) is suflicient in width to cover the entire width of the screen 0, when same is turned upwardly, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. It is preferably attached to said screen by sewing first a line of stitches near to the lower edge of the screen 0 and further by another line of stitches at a point about one-third the width of the screen above the first line of stitches.

If desired, the lower edge of the screen C may be turned upwardly, so as to stiffen the lower part of the screen and form a rim to the cap. This construction also makes a smooth edge, which is desirable.

If desired, the covering-band D may be of a sufficient width, so that its lower edge may be turned upwardly to form a binding and lining or sweat-band for the cap.

The cap is provided with the usual peak E, attached thereto by sewing or in any other suitable way, and also with an elastic band F.

As shown in Fig. l, the covering-band D may at the pleasure of the wearer be turned upwardly and will then entirely cover the screen 0, excluding the air from the interior of the cap, or, as shown in Fig. 2, may be turned downwardly upon itself for about onehalf of its width, the attachment to the lower portion alone of the screen 0, as before explained, permitting of this, thus uncovering an equal portion of the screen 0 for the admission of air and consequent ventilation of the cap.

Instead of securing the covering-band D to the lower edge of the screen 0, it is obvious that it may, if desired, be secured to the upper edge of the screen C in a manner similar to that hereinbefore described, and when so secured the lower portion of the band D will be turned downwardly when it is desired to exclude the air and upwardly when it is desired to ventilate the cap.

Itis equally obvious that the covering-band D may be secured to the inside of the cap instead of the outside; but this is not the preferred construction.

I have shown and described the ventilating means as consisting of a wire screen, because I consider this material as best adapted to the purpose. Other materials may, however, be employed, such as a bamboo screen, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new is- A cap comprising a crown portion and a band portion, the band portion consisting of a base-section or rim and a ventilating-section located between the crown portion and the base portion and extending entirely around the said band of the cap and from the base to the crown portion, the said band portion being provided with a covering-flap for the Ventilating-section, said fla-p having a In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my free portion unattached to the band and hand in presence of two Witnesses.
