SASH PASTENER.
No. 573,509. Patented Dec. 22, 1896.

VILLIAM A. GAMMELL, OF DRAPER, UTAH.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,509, dated December 22, 1896.
Application filed July 10,1896. Serial No. 598,740. (No model.) i
To a. 107mm it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. GAMMELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Draper, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Sash Stops and Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sash stops and locks; and it has for its object, among others, to provide a simple and cheap construction of de vice of this character adapted to be mortised into the edge of the sash, and provided with catches adapted to engage in the strip on the adjacent portion of the frame in which the sash is mounted to slide. I provide two catches, one of which is constructed to hold the sash up and the other to hold it down, so that it cannot be moved in either direction without actuation of the push-pin or thumbscrew, which serves to throw both catches out of operative engagement with the notched bar.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the- I in gs by letter, A designates a suitable casting having flanges a, provided with openings for the reception of the screws or other means by which it is secured in position in a mortise in the side stile of the sash. This casting is chambered, as shown at B, and a cross-bar 0 forms two separate independent openings D upon opposite sides of the center of said chamber, through which work the catches or dogs E, which are mounted independently on pivots F, held in the walls of said chamber, and are acted upon by the springs G, which are arranged within the chamber and bear against the catches or dogs to one side of their pivots. The adjacent ends of the catches or dogs are provided with semicircular screw-threaded openings H, into which is engaged a thumbscrew 1, which is mounted to slide loosely through the opening J in the outer wall of the casting or casing.
K is a rack-bar secured to the adjacent portion of the frame in which the sash moves, and with which .the catches or dogs are designed to engage.
In practice the parts are arranged as shown, and the window is held against movement in either direction, one catch or dog serving to hold it against movement upward and the other serving in a like manner to hold it against movement downward. When it is desired to raise or lower the window, all that it is necessary to do is to push inward upon the push-pin or th umb-screw,when the acting ends of both catches or pawls are drawn inward within the chamber of the casting or casing and the sash is free to be moved up and down. ll'hen in its desired position, pressure on the thumb-screw or push-pin is removed, when the springs act to force the catches or dogs out into their engagement with the rack-bar.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is- The combination with the rack-bar, of the casting secured to the side stile of the sash and having oppositely-disposed pivoted catches adapted to engage the rack-bar to hold the window against movement in either direction, the adjacent ends of said catches being provided with semicircular screw-threaded openings, and springs acting upon said catches, and a push-pin engaging said screw-threaded openings in the adjacent ends of the catches and adapted to actuate said catches simultaneously, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. GAMMELL.
