T. B. BOMAR. SASH FASTENER.
No. 478,272. Patented July 5, 1892.
Unrrnn STATES IATENT nron.
THOMAS E. BOMAR, OF WVOLFE CITY, TEXAS.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,272, dated July 5, 1892.
Application filed April 2'7 1892. Serial No. 480.831. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. BOMAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wolfe City, in the county of Hunt and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sash locks and fasteners; and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readily applied to any of the various forms of sash-fasteners in which a sliding or springactuated locking bolt or latch is employed and which will serve to securely lock the latch at the extremity of either its inward or outward throw, as desired.
The invention has for its furtherand more immediate object to provide a'window-sash fastener which, while simple in construction and easy of manipulation, will at the same time serve to securely lock the sash and will effectually resist all efforts to unfasten the latch from the outside of the window, which with sash-locks of ordinary construction is frequently accomplished by the use of aknifeblade or other form of tool which is adapted to be inserted between the sashes or between a sash and the window-casing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the mechanism employed in securing the latch is arranged above the body of the latch, where it will be out of the way and will not in any manner interfere with the free movements of either the upper or lower sash in passing each other.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combi nation, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is fully illustrated in the acthe drawings by letter, A designates a window-sash fastener of ordinary construction andadapted to be secured to. the face of a window-sash by screws in the ordinary manner. The sliding latch B is seated within a chamber C, and is normally held at the extremity of its outward throw by the tension of a spring D at the inner end of the latch. The outer end of the latch is beveled, as shown at B, and is adapted to engage the teeth of a rack-bar E, secured to the windowframe. In order to operate the latch, a handle F is provided, the shank of which is attached to the upper face of the latch and passes through a longitudinal slot G, which is provided in the upper face of the chamber O.
In order to lock the latch B at either extremity of its throw and prevent the same from being moved by the operating-handle F, I pro vide the following mechanism: A casting H, having one of its ends enlarged and camshaped, as shown at H, is provided. The cam-shaped portion H of the casting is provided with a slot H through which slot is passed ascrew H which screw is passed into the upper extremity of the standard I, which rises from the rear edge of the rear wall of the chamber 0. This casting H is provided upon one side of the cam-shaped portion .11 with an extension K, the outer face of which is provided with alug K, said lug being prefe'rablycast integral with the body of the casting, though, if preferred, it may be separate and secured to the face of the casting in any suitable manner.
The operation of the device is simple and from the foregoing description will be readily understood. When it is desired to lock the latch B at the extremity of its outward throw,
on to engage the opposite face of the handle, 1
where it will serve to hold the same against movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten t,,is'
In a sash-fastener, the combination, with the sliding latch provided witha handle, of a pivoted stop having a portion to engage said handle and a cam portion at its pivot end and an elongated hole in which the pivot works, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS E. BOMAR.
