HAT-SECURING APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,492, dated December 22, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we,EDWIN ROBERT STAND- FIELD, medical electrician, and WILLIAM BREW, engineer, subjects of the Queen of GreatBritain,residing at 71 Cathedral Square, Christchurch, in the provincial district of Canterbury, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Securing a Ladys I-Iat, Bonnet, or the Like to the Head of the VVearer, of which the following is a specification.

This invention provides a simple apparatus for securing a ladys hat, bonnet, or the like to the head of the wearer through the medium of the hair, which will not necessitate puncture of the trimming, will be readily adjustable within and removed from a hat, and which will not ruffle the hair.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the fastener made of Wire. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the fastener of flat metal. Fig. 3 shows the device within a hat.

It consists of a steel spring a, which is preferably flat and furnished with points bc at each extremity, which are at right angles to and either formed integral with the spring or made separately and secured to it by any convenient means. A piece of sheet metal d, provided with points 6 f, is clasped round and fastened to the spring a and forms a bracket or support, to which is pivoted the hair-grip g, which is preferably formed of two wires, bent as shown in the drawings, connected by solder at g. The wire finger-loops h i are pivoted by metal clips j to the spring a, so as to permit of their being folded parallel with the spring or turned at right angles thereto.

hat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In apparatus for securing a hat or the like to the head of the wearer, a removable bar of spring material capable of being bent so as to pass within the crown of the hat and to expand therein said spring-bar being of.

less length than the circumference of the hat whereby it expands to fit a portion of the illside curve thereof, pointed projections carried by said bar adapted to engage the inner surface of the hat to retain it in position, and the hair-grip pivoted to the front of said spring-bar and projecting rearwardly to engage the hairof the wearer, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a spring-support adapted to be fitted to the inside of a hat, a hair-grip carried thereby, an elastic also supported by the spring, a pin in one end of the elastic and a loop on the opposite end, substantially as described.
