NITED STATES BETIIUEL M. DAVIS, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED DOCR CLOSER AND STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,395, dated December 15, 1896. Application filed September 4, 1894. Serial No. 522,066. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BETHUEL M. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Door Closer and Stop; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and use ful improvements in door closers and checks by means of which a door closer and check is provided, being simple in construction, effective in operation, durable, and cheap in first cost.
More particularly my invention relates to a door closer and check purposed to be attached to a door to facilitate in the automatic closing or the checking of the same to hold it open or closed; also, it relates merely to a door-check without the closing feature.
My invention consists, essentially, in the provision of an angle-rod suitably supported for turning upon one of its parts as a pivot, a perforated block or stud attached to a door and provided with a set-screw, and of a coilspring provided with an outwardly-extendin g hooked arm carried around one of the angle parts of the said rod, which may or may not be caused to engage one of the arms of the anglerod through the said hooked extension therefrom. I
That my invention may be more fully understood reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a door with my device attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 3 is a detailed View showing the manner of connecting the spring and the angle-rod, the spring being shown partly in section. Fig. 4 is a detailed View of a perforated block having a set-screw in connection therewith.
In the figures, A is the short arm of the angle-rod. B is the long arm thereof.
0 is a plate provided with the perforated ears D D, within and through which said perforations in said ears the short arm A of said angle-rod is designed to be pivotally carried.
E is a coil-spring carried around the said short arm A of the angle-rod between the ears DVD, the said spring being extended at one end to form the short arm F, which said short arm terminates with the hook G, bearing at right angles therefrom and in such a manner as to engage the long arm 13 of the angle-rod and at a point somewhat removed from. the point of union of the two arms of the said angle-rod. II is a perforated block through which the said arm D of the said angle-rod is carried. I is a set-screw carried in connection therewith.
The several parts being combined and attached in manner shown in the drawings, the door may be opened under pressure from the spring E, when attached, and fixed in any desired position by means of the set-screw I in perforated block H engaging the arm B of the angle-rod, and may be released by disengaging said set-screw,when the door will close under pressure of the said spring.
If the hooked arm F of the spring is disengaged from arm B, the door may be opened naturally and fixed in any desired degree of opening, the same as above described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a combined door closer and stop the combination of a plate 0 adapted to be secured to the door-jamb, and having perforated ears D, of an angle-rod having long and short arms, the latter detachably seated in said perforated ears, the former adapted to bear against the door, a perforated block II secured near the free edge of the door and through which the said arm is passed, a set-screw seated in said block to bear on the arm and hold it against movement, and a spring around the short arm of said angle-rod, one end thereof engaging the plate, and the other extended to form a lever F, and having a hook Gr, whereby it may detachably engage the arms, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BETHUEL M. DAVIS.
