BOTTLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,200, dated December 15, 1896- Applieation filed November 12, 1895. Serial No. 568,690.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALONZO PERRY BLIVEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New-York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles and other Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate correspondifi g parts.

This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class having a neck attachmentwhich is adapted to be secured in place after the vessel has been filled, and the construction and arrangement of which are such that when the vessel has been once filled and the neck attachment applied said vessel may be emptied of its contents, but cannot be refilled or reused without leaving evidence of the fact that it has once been filled and emptied.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a similar view of a modified form of construction on the line 3 3. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown my improvement applied to a bottle, and in the practice of my invention I provide a bottle or other vessel A, having a neck B, on which is formed an extension D.

The neck B is provided with an annular bead b, and the inner walls thereof are preferably slightly inclined from the top downwardly, and I provide a stopper or plug G, which is preferably composed of glass and which is provided at its upper end with an extension or handle g, which is preferably spherical in form.

At the bottom of the extension D of the neck B is formed an annular groove or recess (Z, and the inner walls of said extension are preferably vertical, and formed therein about midway thereof is an annular groove d, and I also employ a plug or stopper H for the extension D, which is also preferably composed (N0 model.)

of glass and provided with an annular groove hand the lower side or end with a recess 7Z2, which isadapted to receive the upper part of the extension or handle 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and employed in connection with the annular grooves d and 72, is an open or split sprin g-rin g K, which is adapted to hold the stopper H in place.

The construction shown in Fig. 2 is substantially the same as is shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that the extension or handle g of the plug or stopper G is omitted.

In this class of devices the bottle or vessel must first be filled before the neck attachment is applied, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

The bottle or vessel is first filled with the desired contents, and the plug or stopper G is inserted into the neck B, after which the plug or stopper H is secured in place, said plug or stopper being inserted into position with the ring K in the groove h, and when the plug or stopper has been forced downwardly, so that the annular grooves 01 and h are opposite each other or register, the ring K will spring outwardly and occupy a portion of both of said annular grooves, and thus secure the plug or stopper H in position.

The bottle or Vessel can only be emptied by breaking off the extension D of the neck, after which the plug or stopper Gmay be removed, and it will be understood that the plug or stopper G may be formed of cork or glass or of any desired material. The extension D may be broken off in any desired manner, but in practice I prefer to cut a narrow slit I. in the annular groove d, by which means the extension may be more easily broken ofi, but this feature is immaterial, and the extension D maybe easily broken off by striking the same with a hammer,or by striking the extension on a. counter, table, or other article. In practice I also place upon the extension D a trade-mark or the name of the manufacturer or proprietor of the contents of the bottle, and the absence of the extension and of the trade-mark or the name of the proprietor or manufacturer of the contents of the bottle will be proof of the fact that the bottle has once been filled and emptied.

It will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation, and which does not add materially to the cost of the bottle.

My invention is not limited to the means for securing the plug or stopper H in position, and I reserve the right to make all such changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described as fairly come within the scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Pat- -ent A bottle, of the character described, the neck of which is provided with an exterior annular enlargement or shoulder I) and an interior annular shoulder and above which is formed anann'ular groove d, a glass stopper adapted to close the lower end of the neck of the bottle an upper plug provided with an outwardly-directed annular groove adapted to register with the groove in the neck of the bottle and a ring K adapted to engage said groove and retain the upper plug in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 8th day of November, 1895.
