SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,198, dated December 15, 1896.

Be it known that I, BYRON S. BAXTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to brushes, and particularly to a reversible brush; and the ob ject of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and durable brush of novel construction.

A further object of the invention is to so construct the brush members that one member will be required to adjust and seat itself in the other member by simply screwing down the nut upon the bolt connecting said members without the necessity of exact adjust,

ment by hand.

The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my brush with the members in the act of being reversed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the brush me1nbers without bristles, showing the members at an angle to each other. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the brush-head member swung into place or into its seat on the handle member from the position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a cross-section of Fig. 3.

In carrying my invention into eifect I constructthe two brush members one with a concave inner surface and the other with a convex inner surface and provide a clamping device for drawing the members into aline ment and so locking them together.

The brush member 1 has a suitable handle 2, a central aperture 3, and its inner surface is concaved throughout its length from one side edge to the other, the outer surface be The brush-head member 4-that is, the

member which carries the bristles 5has its inner surface convexed from one side edge to the other throughout its length to conform exactly with the concaved surface of the ham dle member 1. The member 4 has a central aperture 6, which registers with the aperture 3 of the handle member 1, and has a square countersink 7 for the conical square head 8 of the clamping-bolt 0. This bolt is screwthreaded and projects through the said apertures and is provided with a thumb-nut 10, which does not have to be removed in order to reverse the members, but is simply 1oosened sufficient to allow the members to clear each other to accomplish this purpose and then tightened to bring the members in alinement and lock them together.

It is obvious that the contact-surfaces of the brush members may be reversed or the curvature thereof made greater or less with the same result.

It will be observed that owing to the form of the contact-surfaces the head member when displaced does not require separate operation or handling to put it in exact alinement or other precise position relative to the handle member to be locked with the latter; but said contact-surfaces having no projections or other obstructions and the central location of the pivot-bolt and its length, the latter, by operating the nut, will pull the head member into its seat in the handle member.
