No. 573,108. Patented Dec. 15, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAROIUS C. RICHARDS, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 57 3,108, dated. December 15, 1896. Application filed February '7, 1896. Serial No. 578,421. (Ndmodehl T0 a7] whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARcIUs O. RICHARDS, a resident of Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in door-hangers, the objects of the invention being to produce a door-hanger which shall be simple in construction, comparatively cheap to manufacture, one which shall be light in weight and yet possess 'a great amount of strength, one which shall be easy to attach to or remove from a door, and one which shall be elfeetual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of part-s, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating my improvements, the hanger being shown adapted for two wheels. Fig. 2 is a view of my improved hanger adapted for one wheel. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is an end view.
A represents a base-plate adapted to be secured to the top edge of the door A, and provided in proximity to its ends with slots for the reception of lugs 1, which depend from plates or flanges 2 3, disposed edgewise on said base-plate, the depending lugs 1 being upset under the base-plate whereby to securely rivet the plates or flanges 2 3 to said base.
One end of the plate or flange 2 is recessed on its under edge to form a tongue or hook 4, and the plate 3 is also recessed to form a tongue 5, which projects partially over an elongated slot 6 in the base-plate, and the free end of said tongue 5 is made with a lip 7, which enters the elongated slot 6 in the base-plate. The tongues 4 5 are intended for the reception of a frame 8, said frame 8 being preferably made of a single piece of metal bent upon itself and of such shape that when so bent it will have depending arms or loops 9 10 at its respective ends, and these arms or loops receive the tongues 4 5, the lip 7 on the tongue 5 projecting slightly below the 5 5 end of the arm or loop 10, so ,as to prevent longitudinal movement of the frame 8 when the parts are held in their normal positions,
as presently explained. Asliding plate 11 is disposed between the parallel members of the frame 8 and made between its ends with diagonally-disposed elongated slots 12 12. Pins or rivets 13 pass through the parallel members of the frame 8 and through said elongated slots in the slide-plate, said pins or rivets serving to tie the parallel members of the frame together and also acting as guides for the sliding plate.
hen the hanger is to be provided with 0 one wheel to run on a single track, the arms 14 will be displaced by arms 20, as shown in Fig. 2, the upper ends of said arms 20 being made with widened portions 21 for the reception of the respective ends of two plates 22, 5 each having an elongated slot 23 for the re ception of the journals 24 of a wheel 25.
One end of the sliding plate 11 is beveled, as at 26, and made with an inclined elongated slot 27, extending rearwardly from said bev- 10o eled end of the plate. An outwardly and upwardly projecting arm 28 is secured to the plate or flange 3 and made with an opening 29, in which a screw 30 is swiveled, the. head 31 of said screw being adapted to bear against said arm and also against alu g or projection 32 on the plate The screw 30 passes through a nut 33, disposed in the elongated slot 27 and held in position by means of an arm 34, which is rigidly secured to the plate 11. From this construction and arrangement of parts it will be seen that when the screw 30 is turned the sliding plate 11 will be 1noved,and, being guided by the pins 13, passing through the diagonally-disposed slots 12, said plate can be moved up or down, so as to accurately adjust the wheels of the hanger to the track should the track-rails be a little too high or too low or should the door be slightly too long or too short.
The head 31 of the screw 30 is made with a notch 34, so that the head of the screw can pass the lug 32 on the sliding plate and the screw be withdrawn.
It will be seen that when the screw 30 is in position the frame 8 cannot move downwardly, and hence said frame will be effectually locked in position on the tongues 4 5. \Vhen the screw is removed, however, one end of the frameS can be moved down through the slot 6 in the base-plate so as to disengage it from the lip on the tongue 5, and then the frame 8 and all parts connected therewith can be readily removed and just as readily replaced.
The arm 28 above alluded to not only serves for the reception of the screw 30, but also acts as a stop to engage a similar stop on another door or a stop independent of the door.
My improvements are very simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, light and durable, and are effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Having fully described my inventiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a door-hanger, the combination with a base-plate, of flanges on said plate having tongues, one of said tongues having a depending lip, a frame engaging said tongues, means for normally locking said frame in place, and devices connected with said frame for engagement with a door-supportin g truck, substantially as set forth.
2. In a door-hanger, the combination with a base-plate having an elongated slot therein, of flanges on said baseplate having tongues, one of said tongues having a lip depending into said slot, a frame engaging said tongues, means for normally locking the frame in place, and devices connected with said frame for engaging a door-supporting truck, substantially as set forth.
3. In a door-hanger, the combination with a base-plate, of a frame connected thereto, said frame being made in a single piece bent upon itself, a slide-plate disposed between the members of said frame and having elongated slots, pins passing through the parallel members of the frame and through said elongated slots, and a frame attached to the sliding plate for engagement with a door-supporting truck, substantially as set forth.
4 In a door-hanger, the combination with a base plate and flanges thereon having tongues, of a frame engaging said tongues, said frame being made from a single piece of metal bent upon itself, a sliding plate disposed between the members of said frame and having diagonallydisposed elongated slots, pins passing through the members of the frame and through said elongated slots, a bearing-frame attached to the sliding plate for engagement with the door supporting truck and means for moving said sliding plate, substantially as set forth.
5. In a door-hanger, the combination with a base plate and flanges thereon having tongues, of a frame engaging said tongues, said frame comprising two parallel members, a sliding plate disposed between said members and having elongated ,slots, pins passing through the members of the frame and said elongated slot-s, arms secured to said sliding plate, said arms having sleeves at their upper ends, and a bar adapted to rest on the upper ends of said arms and having pintles to enter said sleeves, substantially as set forth. 7
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
