PATN
DOOR-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 4, 1910.
Application filed March 2, 1910. Serial No. 546,785.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANUEL LIMA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hangers for edgewise movable doors which are suspended from a track located above the door, the hanger carrying a wheel which is mounted for travel on the track.
It is the object of the invention to brovide a hanger of the kind stated, which can be readily adjusted to properly suspend the door, and also one which is simple and strong, and which can be easily put up, and also taken down for oiling.
The invention also has for its object to provide a hanger embodying certain novel structural details to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the upper portion of the door and its casing, showing an edge view of the hanger. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the hanger. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing, 5 denotes a door, and 6 the jamb thereof. The pocket jamb 7 is spaced sufficiently from the jamb 6 to permit the door hanger to pass therebetween. To the headers 8 on one side, is secured a strip 9 which carries the track 10 on which the wheel 11 travels. The connection between the wheel and the door is made by means of a novel form of hanger which will now be described.
The hanger comprises in its construction three sections, to wit, a wheel-carrying section 12, a door strap section 27, and a connecting section 16. The door strap section is connected to the section 16 by a non-vertically movable screw, for the purpose of adjusting the door with reference to the wheelcarrying portion of the hanger.
The wheel carrying section of the hanger comprises a heavy sheet steel plate 12, bent into the shape shown in F 1, and support ing the wheel 11. On the lower end of the plate 12 is an outstanding tongue 13, and a short distance above the same is a tongue 14 which is struck up from said plate. A short distance above the last-mentioned tongue, the plate 12 has a slot 15.
The connecting section comprises a plate 16 having at its lower end an offset portion 17 terminating in a lateral horizontal arm 18. The offset portion of the plate has a T-shaped slot 19, the main portion of which is vertical, and the head portion horizontal, and in the arm 18 are vertical openings 20 and 21, respectively. The upper portion of the plate has slots 22 to receive the tongues 13 and let, and at the top of the plate is a laterally extending tongue 23 which extends into the slot 15. The tongues 13 and 14; proj ect a sufficient distance from the plate 16 to receive keys 23', the projecting portions of the tongues having openings for this purpose. By the means herein described, the plate 16 is rigidly fastened to the plate 12. To the plate 16 is riveted or otherwise fastened a bracket 24 for supporting the head of a screw 25. The bracket 21 has a horizontal portion 26 extending at one end into the horizontal head portion of the slot 19, in which it is supported and provided wit-h a vertical opening to receive the screw 25, the head of the latter being received between the part 26 and the horizontal arm between the main portion of the plate 16 and its offset portion 17, whereby the screw is prevented from traveling in the direction of its length.
The door strap section 27 is connected at its lower end to the door 5, and has at its upper end a lateral horizontal arm 28 through which the screw 25 is threaded, whereby, when said screw is turned, the door will be raised or lowered, the screw being held against travel in the direction of its length as already described. The outer end of the part 28 is reduced in width and extends into the vertical portion of the slot 19, whereby the door strap section is guided to move vertically in a straight line. The door strap section passes through and is also guided by the opening 20 in the arm 18. The screw passes loosely through the opening 21, and projects a short distance below the arm 18, the projecting portion being squared to facilitate the application of a wrench or other tool for turning the screw.
In the top edge of the door is made a recess 29 which extends across said edge, and has a pocket 30. To the top edge of the door is secured a plate 31, covering the recess, and having a slot 32 to receive the lower end of the door strap section 27, said end projecting a short distance below the plate 31, and the side edges of said projecting portion having notches To the bottom of the plate 31 is pivoted at 34, a latch comprising a plate 35 having in one of its edges a recess 36 adapted to receive the notched portion of the door strap section, the opposite walls of said recess entering the notches 33. \Vith the latch in this position, the door strap section is securely locked to the plate 31, and to release the same, the latch is swung on its pivot in a direction to disengage the latch from the notches. The latch works in the recess 29, and has at its free end, near its edge, an opening 37 so that it may be worked by using a screw driver, nailpunch, nail, or any small piece of wood, the same being inserted into the opening. The pocket 30 is constructed to allow the notched end of the door strap section to slip down far enough to enable the latch to engage the same.
The structure herein described makes a simple, efficient and easily adjusted hanger. The lower squared end of the screw is placed in a position so close to the light as to make it easily found and manipulated. The manner of mounting the door strap section on the part 17 effectually prevents the former from twisting and bending and it is guided to move up and down in a straight line. If the door is slammed, it is not apt to jump off, or to be unlocked, as the two notches 33 work against one another. The weight of the door also helps to keep the latch in position. Looseness of the parts is also reduced to a minimum by the latch when the same is in looking position. The door strap section fits snugly in the slot 32 so that there will be no looseness at this point. The bracket 24 also serves to prevent the roller from jumping the track, it having a horizontal portion 38 which extends beneath the strip. A further advantage of the structure is its simplicity, strength and durability, and the fact that it is noiseless in operation.
In assembling the parts, the door resting on the floor, with the plate 31 in place, need not be lifted to be connected to the door strap sect-ion, the latter being lowered by op erating the screw until it is properly positioned in the slot 32 so as to be engaged by the latch, after which the door is ready to be raised off the floor by operating the screw in a direction to elevate the door strap section. It is easily known when the latch is in looking position as it is impossible to swing it to this position unless the notches are properly positioned so as to be engaged by the latch. The connection between the parts 12 and 16 enables the hanger to be readily positioned, and by making said parts separable, they can be packed into small compass for convenience in shipment and storage.
I claim:
1. The combination with a door, of a hanger therefor having a vertical slot, a nontraveling screw carried by the hanger, and a member connected to the door, and having a laterally extending horizontal portion through which the screw is threaded, and said portion extending intothe slot to guide the member.
2. The combination with a door, of a hanger therefor comprising separable sections, one of said sections having projecting tongues, and the other section having slots through which the tongues pass, and from which they project, keys passing through the projecting portions of the tongues, a wheel carried by one of the sections, and an adjustable connection including a screw between the other section and the door hanger memher.
3. The combination with a door, of a hanger therefor comprising a wheel-carrying section, a door strap section, and a connecting section, the latter section being separably connected to the wheel-carrying section, and an adjustable connection between the aforesaid connecting section to the door strap section.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
, MANUEL LIMA.
