Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WALTER BRYENT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR SUPPRESSING EFFLUVIA FROM DRAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,284, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WALTER BRYENT, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Suppressing the Efuvia Arising from Drains, Cess-Pools, Ste.; and I do hereby. declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles of my said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together with `such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in apparatus for suppressing the eftluvia arising from drains, cesspools, Ste.; and it consists in so arranging and constructing the cover of the drain, &c., to prevent the escape of the offensive odor and injurious miasma which, in the ordinarily-constructed covers or gratings heretofore in use, were allowed to pass into and taint the air.
The accompanying plate of drawings represents myimprovements, which I will now proceed to describe in detail.
Figure lis a central vertical longitudinal section of my improved cover complete. Fig. 2'is a top view or plan of the same with a portion of the top or strainer ofthe cover re-A moved.
a c a in the drawings represent the frame of a'drain-cover, having a rabbet or flange, b b, on its bottom to receive the brick-work. The top of the frame a a a, is formed with a groove or gutter, c c, which extends completely. around the inside of the same.
Connected with the top of the frame a a in such a manner as to form openings d d is a basin, e e, fitting into which is a iange or shoulder, ff, that is attached to and extends around the inside of a portable cover or strainer, g g, the outer edges or rims, lt It, of which are so formed as to set into the grooves or gutters c c.
The portable cover or strainer g g is formed with apertures t' t', or with a grating, as may be desired, and through which the waste-water is allowed to pass into the drain.
By the above `description, reference being made to the drawings, it will be seen that the wastewater passes over the strainer g g and the frame a a into the basin e e and the grooves or gutter c c, and as they become filled the overflow is carried oft' through the openings d d, thus always leaving' the basin ee and gutter e c full of water.
Now, it willbe evident that the flanges f f and h It of the stra-inerg g fitting into the basin e e and glitter c c, thus constantly filled with water, perfectly ai r-ti ght j oints are formed which will preclude all the disagreeable consequences heretofore experienced from the on di nary method of constructing covers to drains, Src.
Having thus described my improvements, I shall state my claims as follows:
What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured to me by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the top or strainer g g, formed with the ianges or lips f j' and It It, with the groove or gutter cc and basin e e, as described, and for the purpose specified.
WALTER BRYENT.
