.7 wnsumuma UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN w. ALMAOK, or COSHOOTON, omo.
EGG-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,466, dated December 1, 1896.
Application filed May 2,1896. Serial No. 590,020. (No model.)
T0 at whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN 'W. ALMAOK, of Coshocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Egg-Carrier, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved egg-carrier, the object being to provide a cheap and simple device for carrying eggs by the dozen, halfdozen, (be.
The carrier is specially intended for the retail dealers use for sending eggs to the customer, but the carrier can also be employed by the wholesale dealer for packing the eggs within the crate, from which they can be taken in one-half dozen or dozen lots at a time.
- Another object is to provide a carrier of this kind which can be flattened out for shipping purposes, but can be readily set up whenever it is intended to place the eggs therein.
WVith these various objects in view my invention consists, essentially, in a blank adapted to be folded into a case and one or more series of collapsible cell-cases attached to said blank in such a manner that when the blank is folded the cell-cases will rest within the case capable of receiving and holding eggs.
The invention consists, also, in certain details of construction, all of which will be fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing the invention in use. Fig. 2 is aview showing the blank and cell'case fiat. Fig. 3 is a top View with the cover removed. Fig. 4 shows details of construction.
In carrying out my invention I employ a blank A, of pasteboard, the length of the blank depending entirely upon the number of eggs the carrier is to hold. The width is uniform, as will appear hereinafter. This blank is bent upon the line a to form the side 1 of the case, and also bent upon the linea, to form the other side, 2, the portion between lines a and co constituting the bottom. The top is bent on the line or and is of the same size as the bottom. The cell-cases B are attached to the inner faces of the sides 1 and 2, and in making said cell-cases I employ a serpentine strip 0 and the fiat strip D, the strip D being arranged parallel to sides 1 and 2, the longitudinal portions 0 of the strip 0 being attached alternately to the said strips and sides, thus providinga series of cases, the transverse portions a dividing or separating the cells. The cell-cases are collapsible and fold flat upon the sides, so that the blank and cells thereon can be shipped flat to the user. desired to use them, the side 1 is bent up, then side 2, and then the cover bent down. The cell-cases are then distended and filled with eggs, and it will be seen that I provide a novel form of carrier as a cheap substitute for a bag, so thatthe retail dealer, instead of using a bag, can send the eggs in the improved case with absolutely safety, and they can be so kept in the household.
In the drawings I have shown a case holding one dozen, but it will be understood that the case can be made longer or shorter to hold more or less.
The carrier can be also used in an egg crate in place of the ordinary cell-cases now in common use, and their use greatly facilitates the loading and unloading of said crates.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, an egg-carrier, comprising a top, bottom and sides formed from an integral piece of pasteboard or other suitable material, a serpentine strip 0 so bent as to form portions 0, a fiat strip D running longitudinally of the said egg-carrier, and in conjunction with strip 0 forming egg-cases, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature When it is
