UNITED STATES PATENT EricEa i HERMAN VU'LPIUS, OF LEADVILLE, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF TlVO-THIRDS TO ll. KAHN ANDv JOHN S. DODDRIDGE, OF SAME PLAGE.
HEATER FOR EXPLOSIVES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 571,712, dated November 17, 1896.
Application filed April 27, 1896. Serial NoI 589,269. {No model.)
To all whom t may concern: tion with the water-jacket in anyconvenient 5o Beitknown that I, HERMAN VULPIUS, acitiway, so that the water or fluid in its circulazen of the United States, residing at Leadville, tion will pass through the door and thereby` in the county of Lake and State of Colorado, subject all the walls of the box to about an 5 have invented a new and useful Heater for equal temperature. As shown, the hinges 4,
Explosives, of which the following is a speciconnecting the door with the water-jacket, 5 iication. have registering passages 5 in their members,
This invention relates to appliances for so that the communication between the wawarmiug explosives, such as powder, dynater-jacket and the water-space of the door ro mite, and the compounds thereof. The obwill be maintained at all adjustments and poject is to prevent dangerous heating of this sitions of the door, and by eiiecting comniu- 6o class of compounds even though there should nication in this way extra connections are not be a lack of watchfulness and extreme care required and the parts are reduced to a minion the part oi' the attendant upon whom demum number. t5 volves the task of warming the explosive. rlhe lower rear end portion ot' the water- 'lhe principal feature of the invention vis a jacket is cut away and is support-ed upon a 65 box open at one side and surrounded on the metal frame or stand 6, thereby providing a remaining` sides by a water-jacket, a hollow pit or chamber Tat the lower front portion of door closing the open side of the box and comthe water-jacket, which serves to moderate 2o munieatiug with the water-jacket, and means 'the water or iiuid and prevent overheating,
for heating the iiuid or water in the jacket. which is essential when warming explosives 7o To attain this end bythe provision of simple of high order. A gage S is applied tothe upand effective means is the primary object of per port-ion of the water-jacket and admits of the invention; and the latter consists of the the level of the water in the jacket being de- 25 details of construction and the novel features termined, and by means of a funnel or other which hereinafter will be more particularly device water may be supplied to the jacket set forth, illustrated, and finally claimed. through the said gage, as will be readily unrlhc improvement is susceptible of various derstood. A tubelextends vertically through changes in the form, proportion, and the minor the rear portion of the water-jacket, and the 3o details of construction withoutdeparting hot air from a suitable heater passes therefrom the principle or sacrificing any of the through and by radiation from the sides 8o advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure thereof heats the water in the jacket. Any of the invention an adaptation thereof is form of heater may be employed, and, as shown in the accompanying drawings, in shown, a lamp is had recourse to, since it is whichhbest adapted for the purpose. This lamp l0 Figure l. is a perspective view of a heater is mounted upon a yieldingbase or coil-spring 85 constructed in accordance with the principles ll, xed to the lower portion of the frame or of this invention for attaining the objects stand f5. The burnerportionof the lamp prothereof, the door of the box being open. Fig. jects into the lower end of the tube 9, and the 4o 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longilatter forms in effect a chimney, and by reatudinal vertical section of the same. son of the yielding base the lamp can be de- 9o Corresponding and like parts are referred pressed, so as to withdraw the burner from to in the following description and indicatedv the tube 9 for lighting or for any other purin the several views of the drawings by the pose. 45- same reference-characters. The explosive to be warmed is placed within The box l for receiving the explosive to be the box 1, and the lamp being lighted and ad- 95 heated is open at a side and is enveloped by justed to the position shown will warm the a water-jacket 2, the open side being closed water in the jacket 2, which in turn will heat by a hollow door 3, which is in communicathe walls of the box and raise the explosive to the required temperature, overheating being prevented by the pit or cooling-chamber 7 and by a proper adjustment of the Haine.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. A heat-er for explosives comprising a box, a water-jacket enveloping the box on all sides except the front and having its lower rear end out away, providing a cooling-chamber, a hollow door itting within and closing the front side of the box and having communication with the water-jaoket through its hinges, a tube extending vertically through the rear portion of the Water-jacket, and a heater located in the space formed by cutting away the lower rear portion of the jacket, and adapted to cause a circulation of hot air through the said vertical tube, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. Aheaterforexpl0sives,co1nprisingabox, a water-jacket enveloping the box and having its lower rear end portion cut away, forming a pit or cooling-ehan1loer at the lower front end, a stand fitted to the said eut-away portion of the water-jacket, a tube extending vertically through the rear portion of the jacket, a yielding base, and alamp mounted upon the yielding base and having its upper portion fitted to and extending within the lower end of the vertical tube, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
